Talakere Usha Kiran is an Indian gynecologist living in Dubai, UAE.

Early life and education

Kiran earned her degree from Mysore University in 1989, then her master's in obstetrics and gynecology from the Mumbai University in 1995. She won the FCPS[expand acronym] gold award at Mumbai University.[1][2] After graduation, she moved to the United Kingdom, where she finished her postgraduate training in the Welsh Deanery. In 1999, she became a Member of the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG). She earned a CCT[expand acronym] in 2006, then was named a Fellow of the RCOG in 2011.[1][3]

Career

From 2006 to 2012, Kiran worked as a consultant obstetrician and gynecologist at the Aneurin Bevan NHS Trust. While there, she was also a Joint Lead Clinician/Preceptor for Minimal Access Surgery, Maternal Medicine and Emergency Gynaecology, as well as Chair of the Guideline Committee and Head of Research and Development. In 2013, she began work at Grant Medical College, where she served as unit head and associate professor.[3] Since 2016, she has worked at Prime Hospital Dubai and is currently the head of the Department of Gynaecology.[2][4]

She is the first gynecologist to perform Scarless Surgery (vNOTES)[expand acronym] in the United Arab Emirates.[5][6] Between 2016 and 2022, she performed more than 1500 laparoscopic surgeries at Prime Hospital.

In 2019, Kiran was unanimously voted Senior Vice President of the "All Women IMA Unit" of the Indian Medical Association's Nawanshahr chapter.[7]

In 2021, Kiran visited many hospitals in low-income regions of Africa and Asia to perform surgeries with other medical professionals. During that time, she performed the first laparoscopic surgery in Kargil.[8][9][10]

In 2022, Kiran broke the UAE record for the most fibroids ever removed from a single uterus by removing 168 from a patient's uterus while still managing to preserve the uterus. According to Guinness World Records, the most fibroids removed is 236.[5]

Personal life

Kiran had COVID-19. In 2021, she scaled Mount Kilimanjaro in March, then reached the Mount Everest base camp at 5,364 meters in October.[3][8]
