Uthhan Empowering Artisans is the first initiative in India where the profit from artifact sales goes directly to the respective artisan families without any middlemen. The project eliminates the role of middlemen[1] and other illegal financial exploitation which kept a large sum of skilled workers in India in the dark and never-ending financial agony.
History
Started in 2012, Uthhan is a social initiative of Golden Era Royal Group run by Uthhan Charitable Trust for the upliftment of the financially weaker segment of skilled artisans across India. It has been observed that the value of an artisan product depends on the way of presentation apart from quality, which is alien territory for a skilled worker. As an effort to overcome this obstacle, the products from skilled workers are displayed in various retail outlets exclusively allotted under the banner of the project with the help of government bodies. The project is currently supporting 80,000+ artisans in the states of Kerala, Karnataka, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Odisha, Tripura, Uttar Pradesh, Bihar, Jharkhand, West Bengal, and Meghalaya through craft sales.
Uthhan Charitable Trust is providing raw materials, tools, smartphones, laptops, medical consumables, and sales to economically downtrodden artisans and clusters through its campaign called "Karigar Apnao Sanskriti Bachao Abhiyaan (KASBA)" started in 2020. KASBA has supported more than 10,000 families since inception.
How Uthhan helps artisans
The main reason for the degradation of the artisan community was the uneven distribution of profit by middlemen and distributors to the makers. Uthhan is the first initiative in India where profit from sales goes to the artisan who creates the marvel.[2] Since Uthhan will eliminate the role of middlemen and distributors, the products directly reach the end-users from artisans without any hassles through our platform.[3][4]

2012
- Uthhan started in April 2012 as a joint initiative of different artisan communities and groups with Golden Era Royal Group for the upliftment of the financially weaker segment of skilled artisans.
- Uthhan started its first campaign along with ADO (Artisan Development Organization). The inauguration was performed by Hon'ble Revenue minister Adoor Prakash and Hon'ble Member of Parliament Anto Antony.
- Uthhan awareness campaign in Tirupati.
- Membership Campaign in Wayanad, Kerala along with Artisan Development Organization.
2013
- Uthhan awareness campaign in association with Wags & Whiskers.
- Inauguration of Artisan's 24x7 Helpline number (08884411403) with Artisan Development Organization.
- Introduced India's first Coordinator enrollment system for Artisans at Thiruvananthapuram in Veterinary Association Hall.
- Launched an online web platform for Artisans to enroll and sell handicrafts to customers directly.
- Uthhan team campaign in Malappuram, Kerala.
2017
- Uthhan team visit with Tribal Artisans in Wayanad, Kerala.
- Awareness campaign at Channapatna.
2018
- Launched multi-language (English, Hindi, Kannada, Tamil, and Malayalam & Telugu)[5] Android mobile application for the Artisans to enroll.
2019
- Uthhan enrollment program at Puri, Odisha.
- Uthhan session with students of IBMR IBS College, Bangalore.
2020
- Uthhan launched its first online platform for customers to buy handicrafts directly from Indian artisans.
- Uthhan started a campaign on August 15th, 2020, on the occasion of the 73rd Indian Independence Day for Artisan families where any volunteers/customers can come up and support an Artisan through the campaign called "Karigar Apnao Sanskriti Bachao Abhiyan", in English "Adopt Artisan Save Culture Campaign" with the supporting hashtags – #KarigarApnaoSanskritiBachaoAbhiyan #AdoptArtisanSaveCultureCampaign.
- Jude Anthany Joseph, an Indian renowned film director, screenwriter & actor since 2014, supporting Uthhan's "Karigar Apnao Sanskriti Bachao Abhiyan" in English "Adopt an Artisan, Save our Culture Campaign".
- Uthhan also started a campaign on September 4th, 2020, for Artisan families in the name of "Face of Uthhan" to empower and raise the living standards of each and every below-poverty-line artisan family of India.
- Uthhan is launching "Uthhan Odisha Crafts Mela 2020" from 25th Oct to 7th Nov, 2020.
- Uthhan formed an organizing committee across India exclusively for fighting for the rights of underprivileged artisans.[6]
