Vaccine imperialism
Script error: No such module "AfC submission catcheck". Vaccine imperialism is a phrase that refers to the hoarding of vaccines by rich nations at the expense of poorer countries.[1] It is described as a form of imperialism where countries with more than enough vacines, refuses the wishes of the World Health Organization and does not share the stockpile with those poorer countries. Low-income countries are therefore relying more on COVAX to inoculate their population.[2]
Usage[edit]
The phrase has been used during the COVID-19 pandemic. In December 2020, it was reported by BBC News that the hoarding of vaccines threatens the lives of people living in lower income countries.[3] It is feared by health experts that this will increase inequality between countries.[4]
In India, the phrase has been used to describe how richer countries are unwilling to share raw materials and medical resources with poorer countries.[5][6] American political commentator Krystal Ball from The Hill used the phrase on Rising in May 2021.[7]
