Vanessa Baraitser

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

Vanessa Baraitser is a British district judge.[1] In February 2019, she ordered the extradition of Alexandre Djouhri suspected of funnelling money from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to finance Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 presidential campaign. Baraitser has also ruled that Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange is to remain in prison when his jail term ends because of his "history of absconding".

Extradition of Alexandre Djouhri[edit]

In February 2019, Baraitser ordered the extradition of Alexandre Djouhri, a Frenchman suspected of funnelling money from former Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi to finance Nicolas Sarkozy's 2007 presidential campaign.[2][3][4] This French businessman is wanted by France over a series of allegations including active corruption of a foreign public official, conspiracy to misappropriate public funds and money-laundering. Baraitser wrote in her judgment at London's Westminster Magistrates' Court: "They are alleged to have been committed in circumstances connected with the political campaign of Nicolas Sarkozy."[5][6][7][8][9] Baraitser said "I am satisfied that there is no or insufficient evidence that the French authorities have manipulated or used procedures to oppress or unfairly prejudice Mr Djouhri." She added "I therefore order the extradition to France of Alexandre Djouhri".[10][11][12]

Julian Assange[edit]

Baraitser has ruled that Wikileaks co-founder Julian Assange is to remain in prison when his jail term ends because of his "history of absconding". Baraitser told Assange: "You have been produced today because your sentence of imprisonment is about to come to an end. When that happens your remand status changes from a serving prisoner to a person facing extradition". She said that his lawyer had declined to make an application for bail on his behalf, adding "perhaps not surprisingly in light of your history of absconding in these proceedings". She added "In my view I have substantial ground for believing if I release you, you will abscond again".[13][14][15]
