Vanishing Twin (Hangul: 배니싱 트윈; RR: Baenising teuwin) is a 2000 South Korean film directed by Yoon Tae-yong.
Plot[edit]
Yu-jin is a successful museum curator who leads a satisfying life with her husband and beautiful daughter, Min-ji. One day, she hears that her twin sister Seong-Jin will return from the United States with her brother-in-law soon. Although she is excited to see her sister again, she is overcome with strange anxiety. Jin-ho, her Brother-in-law, who returned to Korea without prior contact, tells her sister is dead. Yu-jin visits her brother-in-law's house and organizes her sister's things, recalling her childhood with her sister. His brother-in-law is obsessed with Yu-jin, and Yu-jin tries hard to reject his brother-in-law, but he is engulfed in confusion. Yu-jin hears from her friend Jung-hwa again an American Indian myth about a coyote that her sister had told her before. Yu-jin, who suspects that there is some kind of connection with her older sister, tries to connect with the communication ID Art Lover who told her friend the story. To Art Lover who is picky about whom to talk to, Yu-jin tells the story of how she witnessed the relationship between a housekeeper and a worker boy at a backyard botanical garden as a child. Art Lover accepts Yu-jin's proposal to meet in person.
When Yu-jin goes to the meeting place, he meets a man who identifies as Art Lover, and he hurriedly leaves during the conversation. Soon after receiving a call from Art Lover, Yu-jin goes out and runs into detectives pursuing him. The detectives recklessly question Yu-jin about her relationship with Art Lover, and Art Lover appears out of nowhere and runs away with Yu-jin. That night, Yu-jin dreams of having sex with Art Lover.
In the second meeting. Guided by Art Lover who will guide Yu-jin to a nice place, Yu-jin goes to the roof of a shabby building. When it is his turn to tell the story, Art Lover tells the story of the Vanishing Twin and the friend who told him the myth of the coyote. Yu-jin secretly locks the roof door and goes to the roof of the building opposite. Yu-jin calls Art Lover to investigate her relationship with her dead sister, but he easily crosses over using a plank. Yu-jin, who is about to faint, and Art Lover are suddenly seized by passion. However, during the relationship, Art Lover disappears.
After following her friend Kyung-seo, who left the house a week ago because of her husband's affair, Yu-jin witnesses a secret meeting between her husband and her friend. When her husband returns home, he points out the relationship between his brother-in-law and Yu-jin, who is rather too close to Yu-jin, who is suspicious, and pours out his usual suspicions. Yu-jin, who is lost in the rain, goes to the rooftop where her and Art Lover went the other day. Art Lover who appears there takes her to his residence. When it is time to talk, Yu-jin confesses that her older sister, who was superior to her, was the object of admiration and love, but also the object of boundless envy and jealousy. After the story ends, Yu-jin, who falls asleep, wakes up and wanders through unknown corridors and stairs to reach the roof of the building. And there, through the roof door, he has a conversation with her deceased sister. Only then does Yu-jin remember the past. As a child, Yu-jin had a relationship with his current brother-in-law, Jin-ho, who lived in the same neighborhood, and the worker boy who watched her at that time was Art Lover. Yu-jin has an affair with Art Lover who comes to her store. Jin-ho, brother-in-law, who visits Yu-jin just in time, continues to stand outside the door. Art Lover and Yu-jin continue their communication conversation. Yu-jin's family went to a picnic in the suburbs. Yu-jin, who was smiling at the fortune-telling in the cookie Art Lover gave her the other day, turns around with an angry face at the voice of her husband calling her.
