Vardaan (English: "Boon") is a Hindi language romantic novel written by Indian Hindi- Language writer Munshi Premchand.[1] It is regarded as the second novel of Premchand after Prema. The story follows a sad love story of Pratapchandra and Vrijan who are neighbours, and love each other since childhood.

Plot[edit]

Munshi Shaligram is a rich childless man from Benaras. He had a wife Suvama. Suvama worshipped mata Ashtabhuja for a son. One day, Mata Ashtabhuja gave her a boon of son who will serve the nation. Thus, Suvama give birth to a son name Pratapchandra. One day, The Kumbh Mela is organised in Prayagraj.[2] Munshi Shaligram visited to that and never returned. Now, Suvama has to raise Pratapchandra alone. Thus, she gave her house on rent to a gentleman name Munshi Sanjeevanlal who lives with his wife Sushila and daughter Vrijan. Sanjeevanlal is very much influenced with Pratapchandra and his knowledge and he is also his teacher. Pratapchandra and Vrijan plays together.

Years passed and Pratapchandra and Vrijan falls in love. Unknown of their love Munshi Sanjeevanlal fixed Vrijan's marriage with Deputy Shyamchanran's spoiled son Kamlacharan. Due to, Vrijan and Kamlacharan's marriage Pratapchandra become depressed and went to a hostel. Initially, Vrijan and Kamlacharan falls in love. Deputy Shyamchanran sent Kamlacharan to the same hostel due to his mischievousness. There, Kamlacharan falls in love with a Gardner's daughter. One day, when he was with gardener's daughter in his house the Gardner arrive and he ran and died on the railway track.

After Kamlacharan's death Pratapchandra went to Vrijan's house to propose her, but he realises he is doing wrong. Regretting of his action Pratapchandra takes Sanyasa.

Vrijan's servant is Madhavi who is influenced with Pratapchandra. After the news of Pratapchandra's Sanyasa she also takes Sanyasa.
