Varian Wrynn is a fictional character who appears in the Warcraft series of video games by Blizzard Entertainment. First appearing in the original launch of World of Warcraft in 2004, Varian was the king of the human kingdom of Stormwind. Following Varian's disappearance, his son Anduin is crowned king of Stormwind. He succeeds his father following his death in World of Warcraft: Legion, as well as his position as leader of the Alliance. Varian also appears as a playable character in the crossover multiplayer online battle arena game Heroes of the Storm. The character is voiced by Chris Metzen.

Varian is known for his warrior impulses and hardline approach in dealing with the opposing Horde faction.

Development[edit]

Varian's name was originally Varien. It was later retconned to Varian. When spelled with an "a", there is the implication that Varian was named after his grandmother, Queen Varia. Alternatively, his name possibly is taken from "valiance" - great courage or determination.

World of Warcraft[edit]

Varian first appeared in World of Warcraft as the king of Stormwind.

In World of Warcraft: Mists of Pandaria, with the land of Pandaria revealed to the world, Varian is seen at the final defeat of Garrosh Hellscream. However Garrosh was able to escape and initiate the events of World of Warcraft: Warlords of Draenor.

In the Legion expansion, Varian was killed by Gul'Dan's forces on the Broken Shore.

Hearthstone[edit]

He appears as a legendary card for the Warrior class in the Grand Tournament expansion of Hearthstone. His flavor text reads: "Leader of the Alliance! Father of Anduin! Also he likes to play Arena, and he averages 12 wins." .

Heroes of the Storm[edit]

Varian is a playable character in Heroes of the Storm as a Tank.
