Bhatinda Fort

Varya, also known as Waryah, Baria, Barha are descendants of Varah Rajput. During the early medieval centuries, the Varya's played a significant role in the politics of Punjab and Rajasthan[1][2]. According to Muhnot Nainsi, the famous Khyat writer of seventeenth century Rajasthan, Varhas were the lords of the forts, like, Uchchha and Derawar at that time[3]. The Khyats of Jaisalmer also include Vitheda or Bhatinda under their possession[4].

Vitheda was an important forest post until the Varhas made it a strong political center. The Lakhi jungle where Vitheda was situated in the local terms was also known as Beeth (or Bihad ), a place where grazing facilities in abundance are available. The Lakhi Jungle was known for its grazing facilities. The ruler of Vitheda was also known as Vanpal [5][6][7]

The fort of Bhatinda during the Kushana period was built by Raja Dab who was an ansestor of Vena Pal[8]. Vena Pal was the Raja of Bhatinda at the time of Shihab al-Din Muhammad Ghauri's invasion[9]. The Biographical Encyclopaedia of Sufis: South Asia By N. Hanif mentions Raja Vena Pal when describing the sufi Rattan," The earlier muslim version represents him as the minister of Vena Pal , the Hindu Radja of Bhatinda, at the time of Shihab al Din Muhammad Ghauri's invasion"[10]

Bhatinda got its name in the late medieval period. The fort of Vitheda or now called Bhatinda was under the possession of Varhas.[11] Prof. B.N. Puri who was the vice-president and member of the International Board of Editors for the history of Civilizations in Central Asia at the UNESCO, and  President of the India History Congress on the basis of the authority of Jain writer Harivansha, who completed his work in 783-84 AD, writes that people living in the region of Sauryas (Sauira: territory lying between Mulatan and Sind) are known as Varhas or Jayvrha[12].

An important reference about the Varya’s comes when the Bhati’s left Punjab as they passed the most critical time in their history sometime between 655-670 AD [13][14][15]
