Vaultry are an alternative rock band from Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.[1] The group's current lineup consists of vocalist/producer Leith Hynds, guitarist Damian Anthony, and bassist Josh Christensen. The band has released one full-length album and one EP.

2014–2015: Formation and Coven[edit]

Vaultry formed in 2014 from the ashes of prior projects. Former guitarists Bradford Davis, Chasen Fraser, and Josh Christensen were in Two Years and Counting for nearly four years, and when their singer departed, they auditioned Leith Hynds. They promptly decided to create an entirely new project, Vaultry. As their bassist left, the remaining members decided to move Josh from guitar to bass. At the start, the band were heavily influenced by the metalcore genre. They paid homage to the scene they knew throughout their debut EP Coven, which was laced with all the trappings of contemporary metalcore outfits. Although they quickly recorded Coven, the EP was held in stasis for almost a year due to other companies involved, all the while the band were experiencing a shift in influences and tastes. By the time Coven was finally released in 2016, Vaultry had been a completely different band and were already playing tracks off Eulogy during the Coven touring cycle.[2] Regardless of the shift in musical direction, Coven was well-received by critics.[3]

2016: Chasen Fraser's illness, death, and preparation for Eulogy[edit]

The creation of Eulogy was a much different experience from that of Coven. A conceptual and extremely personal record, the album follows the life of guitarist Chasen Frasier during his journey through being transgender, his battle with Lymphoma, and his eventual passing in January 2016.[4] Although the band had planned on recording guitars for the album in Chasen's hospice care room, that time was cut short, and the band finished the record on their own.[5] The addition of Damian Anthony on guitars and Skye McLean on drums added a new energy when recording the album, as well as helped motivate the band to record through their grief.[6] Leith's promise to Chasen to finish recording and share his story with the world resulted in a heartfelt and well-received record.[7]

2017–Present: Eulogy, line-up change, plans for the future[edit]

Vaultry's debut LP Eulogy was widely accepted as "heartfelt, courageous, and emotional".[7] After the release, the band played local shows and embarked upon a lengthy headlining tour[8], during which they made multiple radio appearances on The Zone[9], CiTR Radio[10], Radio Humber, and other Canadian radio stations. Since their return from tour, the band have been writing constantly and preparing for their next record. They have recently announced the departure of Bradford Davis and Skye McLean[11], ready to tackle their next project as a three-piece. They have begun recording new material and plan to tour in the United States in late 2018.[12]

Musical Style[edit]

Vaultry's musical style has been described as "melodic alt-rock"[13], as well as "a mix of Alt-Rock and old school Emo, with a little bit of modern post-hardcore".[1] Ryan Black of Soundfiction describes Eulogy as a record that "while classified in the alternative rock genre, is one of much variety and unexpectedness".[14] In an interview with Unfazed Magazine, vocalist Leith Hynds states that they strive to write music that people can connect to.[12]
