VeePN is a VPN service that offers applications for Microsoft Windows, macOS, Linux, Android, iOS,[1][2] Android TV, Smart TV, and Amazon Fire TV.[3] Also, users can manually set up VeePN on routers, video game consoles, and other devices.[1][3] A browser extension is available for Google Chrome, Mozilla Firefox, and Microsoft Edge web browsers.[4]
VeePN software provides a number of cybersecurity features that encrypt web traffic, hide users’ IP addresses, and protect their online identities.[5]
History[edit]
VeePN was founded in 2017.[6] The company is located in Panama,[3][7] a country that doesn't impose strict data retention laws and doesn't support the Five Eyes intelligence alliance.[8][9] At the beginning of 2018, the service presented apps for Android, iOS, and Microsoft Windows.[10] Later the same year, VeePN operated nearly 1,000 servers in 15 locations.
At the beginning of 2019, VeePN launched a browser extension for Google Chrome. It also released applications for Linux and macOS. A year later, the company introduced solutions for Smart TVs and routers. In the second half of 2020, a proxy extension for the Mozilla Firefox browser was presented.[6]
Throughout 2020, VeePN worked on fixing Netflix compatibility issues faced by users in several locations. Also, it increased the number of VPN servers to over 2,500 in more than 50 locations.[1][4]
In August 2021, VeePN added the WireGuard protocol to the iOS app,[3] which significantly improves the performance of a VPN connection.[11] A month later, the app started to support iOS 15.
In January 2022, VeePN released Split Tunneling for the Microsoft Windows app. This feature allows users to choose which apps to exclude from the VPN tunnel.[12]
Technology[edit]
VeePN moves users’ Internet traffic through remote servers and masks their IP addresses.[2] For data encryption, it uses OpenVPN, IKEv2, IPsec, and WireGuard tunneling protocols that support AES-256 (Advanced Encryption Standard).[13][14]
VeePN offers desktop solutions for Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux operating systems and mobile apps for iOS and Android devices.[4][15] It also introduced solutions for Wi-Fi routers, Apple TV,[16] Android TV, Smart TV, and Amazon Fire TV[17], Xbox, and PlayStation[18]. Subscribers can use VeePN on up to ten devices simultaneously.[1] Also, the service provides free proxy extensions for Google Chrome, Firefox, and Microsoft Edge web browsers.[4][19] Previously, it also offered an extension for the Opera browser.[14]
VeePN offers 2,500 servers in over 50 countries.[13] Most of its features focus on data security and Internet privacy.[20] Also, the service can be used to overcome censorship and access global content (stream music, media, and sports).[21] VeePN claims not to collect and store customers’ connection and activity logs.[9] The service’s founders claim that the main goal behind VeePN is to provide an affordable, and and easy to use VPN service accessible to everyone.[22]
The client app includes a number of cybersecurity solutions. NetGuard protects against unwanted ads, phishing, third-party monitoring, and malware.[23] Kill Switch blocks Internet access when the VPN connection is down to preserve data privacy.[3] Double VPN allows routing web traffic through several VPN servers.[13] Also, VeePN offers DNS leak protection to prevent data leakage.[22] The Split Tunneling feature is available for Windows and Android users.[23] VeePN can be used on up to 10 devices simultaneously. The service also has a 24/7 support chat and email support.[3]
The VeePN browser extension is a lightweight version of the VeePN client app. The audit conducted by Cure53 experts didn't spot any significant vulnerabilities in it.[6]
