Venancio "Ven" Tauringana is a professor of accounting and sustainability at the University of Southampton Business School in the United Kingdom. He is noted for work on corporate disclosure and sustainability reporting, particularly in emerging and developing economies. He has served as President of the African Accounting and Finance Association (AAFA) (2017–2019) and is Editor of the Emerald series Advances in Environmental Accounting & Management..[1][2] A UK national research assessment case study documents his leadership of training that expanded sustainability reporting among Ugandan organisations, an activity recorded as societal impact in REF 2021.[3]
Education and career
Tauringana earned an M.Acc in International Accounting and Financial Management from the University of Glasgow and a PhD in Accounting from Edinburgh Napier University. He held academic posts at the University of Bedfordshire and Isle of Man International Business School before joining Bournemouth University (2002–2016), where he became Professor of Accounting. He moved to the University of Southampton in 2016, serving as Head of the Department of Accounting (2018–2023).[4]
Research and impact
Tauringana’s research focuses on corporate disclosure, greenhouse gas emissions reporting and sustainability reporting in emerging economies. His work on adoption of sustainability reporting in Uganda identified capability and training gaps as key determinants of uptake.[5] Findings from this stream underpinned a programme that trained staff from Ugandan firms and universities to produce sustainability reports consistent with global standards, an initiative recognised as REF 2021 societal impact.[3][6]
Editorial and professional service
Tauringana is Editor of Advances in Environmental Accounting & Management (Emerald) and serves on editorial boards including the South African Journal of Accounting Research (associate editor).[2][7] He served as President of the African Accounting and Finance Association (2017–2019), chairing its annual conference in 2019.[1][8]
Awards
Tauringana received the University of Southampton Vice-Chancellor’s Award for Inspiring Leadership (2022).[9] He has also been recognised in later institutional award listings for work on sustainability in teaching and engagement.[10] He received research funding and recognition from Emerald (Emerald Literati Awards)[11]
