Viaccess-Orca (commonly referred to as VO) is a provider of IPTV and OTT TV service platforms and content security services.[1] It is a subsidiary of Orange S.A. and headquartered in Paris La Defense with further presences in France (Paris & Rennes), Israel, Hong Kong, Singapore, South America, and Finland.[2][3]

Viaccess-Orca’s customers include Orange, Sky, Megacable, Cable Club, Mola TV, Tigo, Astro, M7, Canal+, Flynet, Vialis, Forthnet, NTV Plus, Eutelsat, PCCW, Telekom Romania, and others.[4][5][6][7]

Viaccess-Orca is currently led by Philippe Léonetti, who has acted as the company’s CEO as of May 2020.[8]

History[edit]

Viaccess-Orca was created in 2012 by the merger of the French content security company Viaccess (established in 1998) and the Israeli middleware provider Orca Interactive (established in 1996).[9] Merger & Acquisition activity since its formation has included the acquisition of Finnish software company and mobile TV app developer BigHill in January 2017, and the acquisition of Squadeo, a developer of video players for mobile platforms in May 2017.[10][11]

Areas of expertise[edit]

Viaccess-Orca provides solutions and services primarily for the broadcast and video industry. It was one of the first companies to launch a cloud TV service for broadcasters, while it has worked with other companies such as b<>com in the establishment of modern anti-piracy technologies such as dynamic watermarking, a form of digital watermarking, that looks to prevent the illegal live streaming of broadcast content.[12][13]

Recently it has started to transfer its technologies to other fields such as Targeted Advertising, as well as implementing Machine Learning to boost its anti-piracy efforts.[14][15] It has also been active in the field of VR research as well as Industry 4.0 deployments. It is an active member of several industry bodies including the Streaming Video Alliance, the European Commission-funded VRTogether group, and the 3MF Consortium, where it helped establish the 3MF Secure Content Extension.[16][17]
