Prism Reports (dba Prism) is a nonprofit, independent news organization led by journalists of color, with a mission to "reflect the lived experiences of people most impacted by injustice through in-depth reporting and thought-provoking journalism."[1][2][3] Its coverage focuses on race, economy and workers' rights, gender and LGBTQ+, immigration, criminal justice, politics and democracy, climate and environment, and education.[4] Its editorial team is led by editor-in-chief Ashton Lattimore and editorial director Lara Witt.[5][6][7]

Prism's reporting has been touted for its centering of stories underrepresented in mainstream news coverage[2][3][8][9], and republished by Truthout, Daily Kos, Migrant Roots Media, and others.[10][11][12][13]

History[edit]

Prism officially launched in 2020, after a soft-launch in 2019.[14] It was founded by Iara Peng, a nonprofit entrepreneur and founder and CEO of JustFund.[2][15]

Its senior fellows have included Aimee Allison, founder of She the People and president of Democracy in Color; LaTosha Brown, co-founder of Black Voters Matter; Patrisse Cullors, co-founder of the Black Lives Matter movement; Kevin Killer, former South Dakota legislator, cofounder of Native Youth Leadership Alliance and Advance Native Political Leadership, and president of the Oglala Sioux Tribe; Mary Hooks, co-director of LGBTQ group Southerners on New Ground (SONG); Maurice Mitchell, national director of the Working Families Party; Mónica Ramírez, founder of Justice for Migrant Women; and Tanya Wallace-Gobern, executive director of the National Black Worker Center Project.[3][16]

Prism is funded by donations and grants from foundations and individuals.[2] As of January 2022, foundations listed on the website as supporters include the Libra Foundation, Ford Foundation, Open Society Foundations, International Center for Journalists, Open Philanthropy, New Media Ventures, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, Women's Foundation of California, and Solutions Journalism Network.[17]

Notable reporting[edit]

In 2020, Prism senior reporter Tina Vásquez broke a story involving the forced sterilization of detained women at Irwin County Detention Center immigration detention center in Georgia, identifying a doctor mistreating migrant women with non-consensual hysterectomies.[18] Vásquez's reporting was noted for its centering of the affected women's voices[8] and referenced in subsequent coverage by The Intercept, among others.[19]
