Vineet Mittal (born 15 September 1976) is an Indian 'greentrepreneur' renewable-energy industrialist, and global advocate for sustainable development. Widely described as one of the architects of India's clean-energy revolution, he is the founder and chairperson of the Avaada Group, an integrated energy and green-fuels conglomerate with operations spanning solar and wind power, solar PV manufacturing, green hydrogen and its derivatives, and energy storage.[1][2][3] From pioneering India's early Internet infrastructure for VSNL and being core team of VSNL which launched internet in India to executing one of the country's largest renewable-energy transactions, Mittal’s career reflects a consistent pursuit of industries on the cusp of transformation.[4] His leadership combines large-scale project execution with policy advocacy, positioning him as a prominent voice in international climate forums and a driving force behind India’s ambition to lead the global energy transition.[5][6]
Early life and education
Mittal was born on 15 September 1976. He studied Electronics Engineering at the National Institute of Technology, Hamirpur, and later pursued executive education at Harvard Business School.[7][8]
Career
Early ventures
Mittal began his career at Videsh Sanchar Nigam Limited (VSNL), where he was part of the pioneering team that launched commercial Internet services in India. He went on to build successful ventures in the dot-com, business-process outsourcing (BPO), and clean-energy sectors, developing a reputation as an entrepreneur capable of anticipating emerging industries.
Entry into renewable energy
In 2009, Mittal co-founded a renewable-energy company that scaled to over 1.2 GW of operational solar and wind assets within seven years. In 2016, this portfolio was acquired by a major Indian energy conglomerate in a transaction valued at approximately US $1.4 billion, then one of India's largest renewables deals.[9]
Avaada Group
Founded in 2017, Avaada Group was conceived as a platform to accelerate sustainable development through integrated clean-technology solutions. Under Mittal’s leadership, it operates through:[10] As of January 2024, its power-generation arm, Avaada Energy, reported 4.1 GW of operational capacity in India, with projects under development across multiple states.[11] The company announced the commissioning of a 1,250 MW (1.25 GW) single-site solar project at Bikaner, Rajasthan, described as one of the world’s largest IPP solar installations at the time of commissioning.[12]
Avaada Energy
Avaada Energy, the group's Independent Power Producer arm, operating around 5 GW of capacity as of 2023–24, with targets of 11 GWp by 2026 and 30 GWp by 2030. Landmark projects include a 1.25 GWp solar plant in Bikaner, Rajasthan, among the world’s largest single-site IPP solar facilities.[13] Reporting in 2025 also noted Avaada’s production of 720 Wp panels in Nagpur (Butibori).[14]
Avaada Electro
Avaada Electro, an integrated solar-manufacturing business producing high-efficiency N-type TOPCon modules, including India’s first 720 Wp panels. Its Butibori (Nagpur) campus covers the full manufacturing chain from polysilicon to modules and related ancillaries such as glass, aluminium frames, and encapsulants.
Avaada Green Fuels
Avaada Green Fuels — developer of a 0.5 MTPA green-ammonia facility in Odisha, the first in India to receive design-stage certification and grid-banking approval. Avaada partners with Switzerland-based Casale S.A. for ammonia-synthesis technology.[15][16]
Energy storage
Energy storage — projects include 11 GW of pumped-storage capacity across five Indian states and 16 GWh of battery-energy-storage systems under Firm and Dispatchable Renewable Energy (FDRE) programs.
Capital raising and partnerships
In 2023, Avaada secured US $1.3 billion in equity financing, comprising US $1 billion from Brookfield Renewable's Global Transition Fund and US $300 million from GPSC, a subsidiary of Thailand’s Fortune 500-listed PTT Group.[17]
Industry and policy engagement
During India’s G20 Presidency (2023), Mittal was listed among the members of the B20 Task Force on Energy, Climate Change and Resource Efficiency.[18] He has chaired CII’s Taskforce on Green Hydrogen, participating in industry consultations and events on standards and market development.[6] He has contributed to India's Make in India initiative for renewable energy manufacturing[8] and is a member of the World Economic Forum's energy and climate dialogue.[19]
Awards and honours
In 2025, the University of Engineering & Management, Jaipur conferred an honorary doctorate on Mittal for contributions to renewable energy and sustainability.[20]
He has been named among India’s Most Powerful Businesspeople by Business Today and has twice been recognised as the 'Solar Man of the Year' in 2012 and 2014 for his significant contribution to the solar industry.[21][22]
Philanthropy and personal philosophy
Mittal heads the Avaada Foundation, the philanthropic arm of Avaada Group, which implements programmes in education, healthcare, women's empowerment, rural electrification, and environmental conservation across multiple Indian states.[23]
Mittal has described his guiding leadership philosophy as inspired by Karmayogi principles emphasising purposeful action in service of society and drawing from traditional Indian philosophies such as Ashtanga Yoga and Ayurveda’s principles of the five elements (Pancha Mahabhuta: ether, air, fire, water, earth).[24]
