Virgil Abloh: How To Be Both is a 2022 documentary film directed by Cassie Quarless[1] and produced by Maegan Tillock and Cassie Quarless for Why Now. The film was first broadcast in the UK on BBC Three on 11 October 2022 and subsequently made available on the BBC's streaming platform BBC iPlayer.[2]
The film tells the story of the late designer Virgil Abloh, concentrating on his professional ascent: touching upon his early work with Kanye West, his first major project Pyrex Vision, the launch of his luxury fashion label Off-White (company) and his eventual artistic direction role at Louis Vuitton amongst other things.[2]
Plot[edit]
The film deals, amongst other things, with Virgil's rapid rise in the world of high fashion as well as his status as a pioneer in bringing streetwear and black culture into that sphere.
The film charts many of the most important milestones in Virgil's career and his presence in popular culture: contributors speak about the infamous 2009 Fashion Week Photo featuring Kanye and his acolytes, the birth of Virgil's Pyrex Vision fashion label, the launching of Off-White (company), Virgil's many creative collaborations (with special attention paid to those with Nike, Inc. and IKEA), Virgil's time as Artistic Director for Menswear at Louis Vuitton, as well as his social justice activism.[3]
Many contributors speak to the fact that Virgil's rise within the industry wasn't without it's detractors and attention is paid to some of the criticism that existed around Virgil, his approach to design and the feeling amongst some people that parts of its oeuvre was plagiarised.[4]
Cast[edit]
The film features contributions from a number of well-known figures as well as people who Virgil deeply inspired and influenced such as:[2]
- Honey Dijon
- Headie One
- Tommy Ton
- Louis III
- Omar-S
