Vishnu Prabhakar is an Indian cinematographer who works in Malayalam cinema. He is known for his collaborations with the director Krishand, including the film Aavasavyuham (2022) and the streaming series The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang (2025).[1][2][3]
Career
Prabhakar was the cinematographer of Krishand's Aavasavyuham: The Arbit Documentation of An Amphibian Hunt (2022), a Malayalam mockumentary science-fiction comedy. He shot the film in a cinéma vérité style intended to give its blend of fantasy and documentary sequences a realistic, reportage-like texture.[2][1] The film premiered at the International Film Festival of Kerala, where it received the FIPRESCI and NETPAC awards, and it later won the Kerala State Film Award for Best Film.[2]
In 2025 he was the cinematographer of Krishand's streaming series The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang (Sambhavavivaranam Nalara Sangham), a crime comedy set in a fictionalised Thiruvananthapuram. Reviewers noted his use of colour and stylised framing to give the setting a comic-book quality.[3][4]
Prabhakar has also worked on other Malayalam productions, including the feature Vivaha Avahanam (2022) and, as chief associate cinematographer, Krishand's Purusha Pretham (2023).[5][1]
Style and recognition
Prabhakar's work on Aavasavyuham was described as adopting a documentary-like, cinéma vérité approach that supported the film's mock-documentary structure.[2] In its review of The Chronicles of the 4.5 Gang, The News Minute wrote that his cinematography framed the fictional city with a comic-book vibrancy.[3]
