A Vistogram® is a visualization for schedule based data. Schedule based data sets are used extensively in project management but can be used in any scenario in which a set of events or activities needs to be published, maintained and shared.

Vistogram® is a UK registered trademark[1] owned by Omnivisto Ltd.

In every day usage, just like the bar chart or a pie chart, the visualisation is referred to as a Vistogram® or the Vistogram®.

History and development

The Vistogram® was developed by a group of technology professionals based in Yorkshire, England. Initially conceived in 2020[2], it took several years to refine the vision and bring a product to market. The first commercial version of the Vistogram was implemented as a Microsoft Power BI custom visual and was published in the AppSource commercial marketplace in October 2025.

The principal motivation for the development of the Vistogram® was the extremely limited options for visualizing schedules beyond those that had existed for 100 years or longer. In particular, the Gantt chart did not support the creation, maintenance and publication of plans with the capabilities, ease of use and characteristics suited to the 'digital era'.

Capabilities

The original ambition for the Vistogram was that it would unify data from multiple sources and provide one simple, easy to use and interactive visualisation of schedules comprising either just a few or a very large number of activities and events.

The current implementation of the Vistogram in Microsoft Power BI supports up to 30K (thousand) items. Future versions will potentially significantly greater volumes.

A core capability of the Vistogram is its crowd-control algorithm which was awarded patent (11,989,203) by the US Patent & Trademark Office in March 2024. An application to the US Patent & Trademark Office titled "Methods, Devices, And Systems for Outputting a Representation of Data" was granted patent in March 2024.
