Vov Dylan (born Wodzislaw Dylan Elsley) is an Australian-born violinist.[1] He holds the title of "World's Fastest Violinist", since January 2014.[2][3] He has issued multiple albums distributed globally by Ambition Entertainment, and tours throughout Australia and the globe with his own show "Beyond the Danube".[4]
Early life
Vov Dylan is a third-generation musician. Grandparents Fred and Beryl Elsley were both pianists, and father Evan Elsley is also a violinist.[citation needed] Born as Wodzislaw Dylan Elsley,[5] this was rapidly shortened to Vov Dylan Elsley by the time of going to school, and then he adopted the performing name of Vov Dylan in 1998.[citation needed] He started his musical training at the age of 21 months, and was in constant demand with appearances on recordings, television, and concert stages. He attended Newington College (1993–1998) and was the recipient of a music scholarship.[6]
Career
Dylan started to gain wider recognition in 2004 when he formed his first orchestra and started to headline shows in his home state's club circuit. His light classical shows started to sell out venues, and he soon found himself with a growing orchestra and a full performance diary.[citation needed] In 2007 he started recording his first studio album, The Affair, which was coupled with overseas tours. In September 2008, Dylan was part of an ensemble, with Celia Craig, Lamorna Nightingale, Ros Dunlop, Evan Streater, Andrew Wilson, and Richard Craig to perform the world premiere of Tensility-vortex: for mixed ensemble by Peter McNamara at University of Western Sydney (Nepean campus).[7]
In January 2014, he took the world record for "Fastest Violinist" while performing The Flight of the Bumblebee in 38.1 seconds. In 2015, Dylan started a partnership with Ambition Entertainment which saw his albums gain international distribution.[8]
Vov Dylan's shows currently tour across Australia under various titles including:
- "Beyond The Danube",
- "The Hollywood Palace"
- "Sentimental Journey"
- "Virtuoso Of Violin".
He fronted the Vov Dylan Quartet, on violin, to provide a pre-film concert in June 2015 at the Glen Street Theatre, Sydney for its screening of Mary Poppins.[9] Joining him were Brian Dean on guitar, Will Dower on drums, Nicole Murray-Prior on double bass, and John Watson on piano.[9]
Recordings
Vov Dylan has released 9 albums with global distribution via Ambition Entertainment.[citation needed]
Recordings with Glenn Amer
Dylan and pianist Glenn Amer have recorded three albums together: The Violinist: Romantic Classics, Timeless (2015) and Cocktail Classics. This association has also created a touring show "Sentimental Journey".[1]
Recordings with Enzo Toppano
Dylan worked with Australian accordionist Enzo Toppano in the last stages of his career, and together they released a duo album "Cafe Classics", and Enzo recorded on two further orchestral albums of Vov's including:
- So In Love[10]
- It had To be (to be released 2017)
Bartok's 44 duo's for two violins
Vov Dylan made the first Australian recordings of this major body of work with violinist Robert Sek. He also released a special edition of these recordings following the "Concert performance order" as prescribed by the original edition as opposed to the "Pedagogical Order" normally followed. This is the first recording globally of these works released in this fashion.[11]
World Lullabies
A duo album recorded with guitarist Brian Dean, World Lullabies takes lullabies and popular melodies from around the globe to help soothe babies to slumber.[12] This album was scheduled for re-release in October 2016 in a joint promotion with the Australian branch of Starlight Foundation.[citation needed] World Lullabies reached No. 8 on the ARIA Hitseekers Albums chart in November.[13]
The World's Fastest Violinist
On 24 January 2014, Vov Dylan took the record for being the World's Fastest Violinist. Quoting The Australian Book Of Records website:[2]
World's Fastest Rendition of the 'Flight of the Bumblebee' on an Acoustic Violin - Vov Dylan
Date of Record: 24/01/2014. Australia's fastest violinist Vov Dylan (born Wodzislaw Dylan Elsley) smashed the world record for playing 'the Flight of the Bumblebee' in the fastest time. Vov played this renowned technically challenging piece on his Scott Cao violin, in a world best time of 38.10 seconds, beating the previous best of 44.87 seconds held by Yara Amirbahonar, from Iran. Vov Dylan and his string quintet were performing a wonderfully entertaining classical show at Lizotte's Restaurant, Dee Why, NSW and Vov decided as he is Australia's fastest violinist, he would attempt to break the world record. Vov broke the world record twice on the night, his first attempt recording 39.55 seconds, thereafter with the audience of witnesses encouraging him to have another go, he achieved a phenomenal 38.10 seconds.
Private life
Vov Dylan married Toni. The couple have a child and, as of February 2015, they reside in Thornleigh.[14]
