Summary
WPML (WordPress Multilingual) is a plugin for WordPress, developed by OnTheGoSystems Limited. It is designed for small to large-sized online websites using WordPress. Launched in 2007, the plugin quickly became popular for its simplicity to install and customize. WPML is used on more than 600,000 websites.
History
WPML started as a small project and was freely available on Wordpress.org repository in 2009. As the project grew, developers realized that it required more resources than they could dedicate without any income and so in 2011, they announced that WPML would become a paid plugin.[1] At that time, WPML was only using their own translation service ICanLocalize. In 2013, the first stable release of WooCommerce Multilingual was published. This version made it easy to run multilingual e-commerce sites powered by the WooCommerce plugin. A month later, WPML was opened to more translation services. The new interface allowed WPML to send translation jobs to different translation services. This meant that webmasters could choose their favorite translation service and select what to send for translation. Everything happened automatically, including sending the content, collecting the translation and saving it in WordPress.[2]
In 2016, a process of integrating with page builders began. This version included full support for shortcode-based builders using WPML’s language configuration file.[3]
About WPML
WPML is a commercial plugin for WordPress, the world's most-used CMS[4]. WPML plugin extends the functionality of the basic WordPress CMS in a way that makes WordPress multilingual. This plugin is ranked as the 15th most popular WordPress plugin on the Internet.[5]
WPML lets authors translate content into different languages. It also includes advanced features for translation management and an interface for sending content for professional translation. Using WPML requires no technical or programming skills. Site admins can install it and turn their site multilingual, without any coding. WPML includes a complete API for integrating with other plugins and translation systems. This way, developers can easily use WPML and turn their products into multilingual ones. There are three WPML account types for the WPML plugin. Each of the account types is suitable for specific user needs or types of users.[6]
WPML comes with a GPL license but is also trademarked. OnTheGoSystems Limited owns and oversees the WPML trademark.[7]
WPML allows users to connect their sites with leading Translation Services directly from their WordPress dashboard to make the translation process simpler, faster and more affordable. WPML users can simply select the pages and send them for translation to any of the integrated Translation Services.
The plugin offers a wide range of Translation Services specializing in all kinds of fields and languages.
OnTheGoSystems runs a program that helps others in the WordPress market to achieve compatibility with WPML [8]. Major plugins and themes are officially compatible with WPML.
