WWE SmackDown 1000 was a television special that aired live on the USA Network in the United States on October 16, 2018. The special marked the 1000th episode of WWE's second oldest television program SmackDown.[2] SmackDown 1000 took place on October 16, 2018 at the Capital One Arena in Washington, D.C.[3][4]
The show featured five professional wrestling matches, a dark match between Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair for the WWE SmackDown Women's Championship, a Tag Team match between The Usos (Jimmy and Jey Uso) and Daniel Bryan and AJ Styles, The Miz vs. Rusev, The Bar (Cesaro and Sheamus) vs. The New Day.[5] In the main event, Rey Mysterio defeats Shinsuke Nakamura to qualify for the WWE World Cup.[6]
SmackDown 1000 was the highest rated episode of SmackDown in 2018, with a 2.5 rating and a over 2,545,000 viewers. The episode received positive to mixed reviews.[7][8] Critics praised the return of Rey Mysterio, the Evolution reunion, and the Cutting Edge segment, but criticized The Undertaker's appearance at the show, and the Truth TV segment.[9][10][11]
Production[edit]
WWE SmackDown premiered on August 29, 1999 with its first episode being held in Kansas City, Missouri. The show was originally broadcast in the United States on UPN as part of the network's Thursday night lineup. The show would move to various networks and nights before beginning to air live Tuesday nights on the USA Network in July 2016.[12][13][14]
In August 2018, WWE announced that SmackDown would hold its 1000th episode on October 16, 2018 from Washington, D.C.'s Capital One Arena.[15][16] Throughout October, WWE announced that Hall of Famers and legends Edge, The Undertaker, Rey Mysterio and Evolution (Triple H, Ric Flair, Batista and Randy Orton) would appear at the event.[17][18][19]

The event comprised 5 matches, that resulted from scripted storylines, where wrestlers portrayed heroes, villains, or less distinguishable characters in scripted events that built tension and culminated in a wrestling match or series of matches. Results were predetermined by WWE's writers on the SmackDown brand, while storylines were produced on SmackDown Live and earlier PPV events.
The show began with AJ Styles and Daniel Bryan teaming up against The Usos. The match ended when AJ Styles once again got involved, Bryan accidently clocked him with a forearm, which led to Bryan getting a double superkick from Jimmy & Jey that led to The Usos picking up the win.
"Truth TV," despite being cancelled on the September 25th 2018 episode of SmackDown Live,[20] R-Truth and Carmella kicked off SmackDown 1000 with guests Shane McMahon and Stephanie McMahon. Shane McMahon and Stephanie McMahon started off reflecting on the history of SmackDown.[21]
However, Stephanie and Shane were quick to get into a agrument, even arguing about which brand (Raw or SmackDown Live was superior) until Mr. McMahon arrived to end the agrument. McMahon addressed to the WWE Universe, wondering how they would entertain everyone tonight until the decision was finalized and that was a dance break.
Triple H, Randy Orton, Ric Flair and Batista were all entering the ring at the start of the reunion, but an agrument began when Orton insulted everyone else in the group, including Batista, who he insulted for going to Hollywood instead of consistently being here in WWE.[22] Batista disregarded Orton's comments and then explained why it was so important to him to be here for SmackDown 1000.[23][24] The Animal proclaimed that the WWE Universe and his Evolution were two of the reasons he returned at SmackDown 1000.[25]
Batista then praised his co-members and talked about what they all meant to him. He praised Orton, Flair and Triple H, but then reminded The Game that he never beat Batista. Triple H did not take kindly to Batista's words, but the tension seemed to diffuse when the two hugged it out only for both to still give each other a side-eye as the hugs began to flow throughout the group.[26] This segment would later become remarkable as a feud between Triple H and Batista began in 2019 and later led to a match at the next years WrestleMania.[27][28] However, the match was poorly received.[29]
At Super Show-Down, Triple H defeated The Undertaker in a no disqualification match. After the match, Triple H and Undertaker, along with Shawn Michaels and Kane, who were in the respective corners of Triple H and Undertaker, showed mutual respect for one another until Undertaker and Kane attacked Triple H and Michaels. On the following Raw, Triple H and Michaels formally rechristened themselves as D-Generation X, challenging The Brothers of Destruction to a tag team match at Crown Jewel, marking Michaels' first match since The Undertaker retired Michaels at WrestleMania XXVI in March 2010.
On the SmackDown 1000 special on October 16, The Bar (Cesaro and Sheamus) defeated The New Day (represented by Big E and Xavier Woods) to win the SmackDown Tag Team Championship, with help from their new ally Big Show. A rematch for the titles was scheduled for Crown Jewel.
As the WWE World Cup tournament continues to determine the best in the world on the line, The Miz and Rusev fought and Rey Mysterio and Shinsuke Nakamara fought for the WWE World Cup qualifications.[30] SmackDown Women's Champion Becky Lynch and Charlotte Flair joined WWE Hall of Famer Edge, who hosted the return episode of “The Cutting Edge,”[31] and discussed their ongoing conflict ahead of the first-ever Last Woman Standing Match for the title at WWE Evolution.
Reception[edit]
SmackDown 1000 drew over 2,545,000 viewers,[32][33] up more than 400K from the previous week’s non-anniversary episode.[34] SmackDown 1000 also drew a 0.92 rating in the 18 to 49 demographic, up from the previous episode held on October 9, 2018 which drew a 0.67 rating in the same demographic.[35][36] SmackDown 1000 finished fifth on cable.[37]
