Wachtyrz is a Silesian social and cultural website owned by Silesia Progress in Kotórz Mały in Upper Silesia.
The website was launched in 2018.[3] It mainly covers the entire Upper Silesia region, both its Polish and Czech parts. Sporadically it deals with topics concerning Lower Silesia as well.[4]
Wachtyrz is notable for its being a matter of interest of scholars researching minorities in Central Europe, and their languages. The website is available without charge and is financed by advertisers, as well as crowdfunding.[5] More than half of the articles published on the website are in Silesian.[3]

Wachtyrz was established by Pejter Długosz, Silesia Progress' owner, Grzegorz Kulik, columnist and translator, and Rafał Szyma, bloger and writer.[3] The article, announcing the launch of the website was published on January, 30th 2018, and the editorial team wrote on the start We are not going to compete with big news agencies because we do not want to replace other news sources. Our aim is to arise as a new tool of Silesian being on the Web of our users.[6]
The website became media partner to multiple social[7] and cultural[8] events, as well as science conferences[9] and books related to the Silesian culture, such as the Silesian translation of The Little Prince,[10] the novel Sprawa Salzmanna. Trup, którego nie było (The Salzmann case. The deadman that did not exist) by Monika Kassner,[11] and the book of Silesian poetry Cebulowŏ ksiynga umartych (The Onion Book of the Dead) by Mirosław Syniawa.[12]
According to some scholars the website became place of highly interesting discussions over the future of the Silesian language.[13] Some have used materials published on the website in their research about Silesian separatism.[14] Other scholars chose the website as the medium to publish their research on Silesian matters.[15][16]
Contributors[edit]
The website allows publishing of articles by community. After registering one can write own articles.[17] During the first year of operation, apart from the three members of the editorial team, 56 other authors have published their own articles.[3]
Language[edit]
During the first year of operation, over half of the articles were published in the Silesian language, 47% in Polish, while 2% were published either in German, Czech, or English.[3] The articles written in Silesian became part of the Silesian Language Corpus published in 2018.[18][19]
Financing[edit]
The website is available free of charge, and is financed by advertisers. Apart from that readers are encouraged to voluntarily support the website financially.[5]
