Wake. is a 2018 American dramatic comedy film directed and produced by Cyrus Mirakhor and written by Carey Crim. It is an adaptation of the play Wake by Carey Crim which premiered at Purple Rose on June 18, 2009.[1][2]

The film marks the independent film debut of comedian Jo Koy.[3][4]

Plot[edit]

A widowed mortician receives a birthday gag gift from her mother and daughter. The gift, a life-size doll, soon comes to life as her dead husband, complicating life with her family and her budding relationship with a documentary filmmaker.[5]

Wake. was filmed in Long Beach, California over a 16-day period in June and July, 2017.[7]
Grammy Award-winning composer Rich Jacques provided the score and collaborated with his writing partner Lisa Loeb on two songs, for which she also provided the vocals.

Release[edit]

The film premiered at Heartland International Film Festival on October 13, 2018.[8] It had a limited theatrical run in Los Angeles beginning September 20, 2019.[9]

The film released on digital download through all major video on demand providers on October 8, 2019.[10]

Following the 2018 Heartland Film Festival premiere, the film was an official selection in other notable film festivals including 2019 Newport Beach Film Fest[11]; 2019 Sedona International Film Festival; 2019 Riverside International Film Festival[12]; 2019 Omaha Film Festival[13]; 2019 Method Fest Independent Film Festival[14]; 2018 Hawaii International Film Festival[15]; and 2018 Ridgefield Independent Film Festival.[16]

Wake. won the Director's Choice, Best Indie Spirit (Narrative Feature) at the 2019 Sedona International Film Festival.[17]

At the 2019 Riverside International Film Festival, it won Jury Best Feature, Jury Best Actress (Myndy Crist), Best Supporting Actress (Caroline Lagerfelt), and President's Award (Ensemble Cast).[18]

It received the Best of Fest award at the 2019 Alexandria Film Festival in Virginia.[19][20]

It received the Cambria Heart Award at the 2020 Cambria Film Festival.[21]
