Walid Tawfik

Prof. Walid Tawfik [2] (born July 6, 1969) is an Egyptian academic researcher at Cairo University.[3][4][5]
Early life and education
Tawfik was born on July 6, 1969, in Cairo, Egypt.[3] He earned his Bachelor of Science in Physics from Cairo University in 1992,[6] followed by a Master of Science in Physics in 1996. He completed his PhD in Physics in 2000 at Cairo University in collaboration with the Technical University of Munich, Germany.[2] His dissertation focused on the study of photon-molecular interaction dynamics using short laser pulses.[7][full citation needed][8]
Career
Academic leadership
Tawfik has held several academic leadership positions, including Chairman of the Department of Laser Applications in Metrology, Photochemistry, and Agriculture (LAMPA)[1][6] at Cairo University since December 2020.[9] He has overseen curriculum development and accreditation processes, including those aligned with NAQAAE and ABET standards.[10]
Research
Tawfik's research focuses on the interdisciplinary application of ultrafast lasers, nanotechnology, and artificial intelligence models (AIM) in environmental analysis and cancer treatment[1]. He has published over 80 papers in Web of Science-indexed journals and has an H-index of 20.[11] His work on laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS) has been widely cited, and he has been recognized as one of the world's top 2% scientists in photonics by Stanford University (2021–2024).[12]
Projects
- Principal Investigator: A project funded by the Science and Technology Development Fund (STDF) with a budget of 10 million Egyptian pounds, focusing on the detection of soil contamination using laser-induced breakdown spectroscopy (LIBS). [13]
- Co-Principal Investigator: A joint Egypt-US project funded by STDF, focusing on photoactive biocompatible carbon-based nanocomposites for cancer treatment.[14]
Publications
Tawfik has authored or co-authored numerous publications.
