File:United States of America v. Donald J. Trump and Waltine Nauta.pdf Waltine Torre Nauta (born 1982/1983[2]) is an American political aide and former naval noncommissioned officer known for his work for former president Donald Trump. He was Trump's valet at the White House, and continued to work for Trump at his Mar-a-Lago club and residence after Trump's term ended. In June 2023, Trump and Nauta were indicted by a federal grand jury; Nauta was charged with six counts of federal crimes.[3][4]
Early life
Nauta grew up in Hågat, Guam. He graduated from Southern High School.[2]
Career
Nauta enlisted in the U.S. Navy in July 2001.[2] He was a Navy cook (with the rating of culinary specialist).[5] He joined the Presidential Food Service, which is part of the White House Military Office, in 2012.[5][1] During the presidency of Donald Trump, Nauta became a personal valet to the president,[6] acting as his butler,[5] body man,[5] and gofer.[6] He was promoted to senior chief petty officer in September 2020.[6]
When Trump left office in January 2021, Nauta went with him to Mar-a-Lago;[7] he also was with Trump at his club at Bedminster, New Jersey.[4] He frequently traveled with Trump at public appearances and campaign events.[5] He went on the payroll of the Save America PAC beginning in August 2021,[5] and his service in the Navy ended in September 2021.[6] He was also paid by Trump's 2024 presidential campaign.[5]
Investigation and indictment
Nauta became a witness in the FBI investigation into Donald Trump's handling of government documents.[2] According to the subsequent indictment, in the waning days of Trump's term in office, both Trump and Nauta packed items from the White House to ship to Mar-a-Lago in Florida.[5] The indictment alleges that, between November 2021 and January 2022, Nauta, acting under Trump's direction, moved boxes that included illegally retained classified documents from a storage room at Mar-a-Lago to Trump's residence.[3][4]

The indictment also alleges that, after a federal grand jury issued a subpoena in May 2022 requiring the return of the government documents, Nauta assisted Trump in concealing documents from the grand jury, the FBI, and Trump's own lawyers.[1][8] It specifically alleges that Trump and Nauta misled a lawyer (referenced in the indictment as "Attorney 1," and identified as Evan Corcoran) who was working on gathering documents to comply with the subpoena.[8] According to the indictment, between May 23, 2022 (when Trump met with his attorneys) and June 2, 2023 (when Corcoran told Trump he planned to search a storage room in Mar-a-Lago for documents sought by the subpoena), Nauta was seen on surveillance video removing 64 boxes from a storage room and delivering them to Trump's residence, then returning only 30 boxes to the room.[8][9] The indictment states that Nauta lied to FBI investigators in May 2022, by falsely claiming he was not aware of boxes being brought to Trump's residence for his review.[3]
Investigators with the independent special counsel investigation led by Jack Smith had come to doubt Nauta's account of his activities,[10] and beginning in fall 2022 considered whether to charge him with crimes.[11] He declined to cooperate with prosecutors,[11] and on May 24, 2023, the special counsel formally notified Nauta that he was a target of the investigation.[12]
On June 8, 2023, Nauta was indicted by a federal grand jury in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida, based in Miami in the same case indicting Donald Trump. Nauta was indicted on six counts: conspiracy to obstruct justice, withholding a document or record, corruptly concealing a document or record, corruptly concealing a document in a federal investigation, scheme to conceal, and making false statements and representations.[3][4][13]
