Wat Ban Luk (Thai: วัดบ้านหลุก) is a Buddhist temple affiliated with the Mahanikaya sect, located in Mueang Nga Subdistrict, Mueang Lamphun District, Lamphun Province, Thailand. The temple grounds cover approximately 7 rai 1 ngan 3 square wa.
The temple was established in 1782 CE. Legend states that the ruler of the Hariphunchai Kingdom led an army to victory against enemies in Kengtung (Chiang Tung), Myanmar. He resettled people from Yon back to Hariphunchai, including an unnamed monk skilled in occult practices who had resided at a temple named "Wat Ban Luk" there. The monk founded a new temple north of the city as a defensive outpost and named it after his original temple.[1]
The temple's buildings are ancient yet intact, particularly the vihara and ho trai (scripture library, also called ho tham). The ho trai was constructed in CS 1258 (1886–1887 CE)[2] under Khru Ba Panya. It is a two-story wooden structure on stilts with a rectangular plan, connected to wooden monks' quarters. Exterior carvings depict the Four Heavenly Kings, the roof features mirrored glass inlays and brass-covered finials, and windows show painted deva processions. It houses well-preserved ancient palm-leaf Tipitaka chests. The ubosot (ordination hall) has elaborate carved wooden gables but is in poor condition.[3]
