Wavedash (stylized as WAVEDASH) is an American production/DJ trio consisting of Luke Shippey, Michael Stone, and Gavin Bendt based in Austin, Texas.[1][2] They are best known for their unique sound design and releases on American record labels OWSLA, Mad Zoo, and Gud Vibrations.[3][4] Their debut studio album called, "World Famous Tour" was announced early May 2020 and it is released on April 2, 2021.

Early life[edit]

Shippey, Stone, and Bendt met while attending high school in their home town of Austin, Texas. The trio was first introduced to electronic music through acts like Daft Punk, Skrillex, and The M Machine. They later went on to meet and work frequently with collaborators Quest!, fknsyd, and Shadient. They initially opened for acts Krewella, Kill The Noise, and eventually Slander and Nghtmre and played frequently at local venues. The name “WAVEDASH” derives from the video game Super Smash Brothers Melee, in which characters traverse the map quickly as a form of movement and to gain an advantage.[5] They have performed at EDC (Las Vegas)[6], Nocturnal Wonderland[7], Electric Zoo[8], Lollapalooza[9], and South by Southwest.[10]

Music Career[edit]

In 2014, WAVEDASH began producing music and releasing tracks online via free digital download. In April 2015, they self-released their debut single, “Theories,” alongside Quest! via Soundcloud. Later that month, WAVEDASH and Quest! would follow up “Theories” with up-tempo single “Flood,” premiering exclusively on EDM.com.

In August 2015, WAVEDASH released their first remix of Valentino Khan’s “Deep Down Low,” via the now defunct Nest HQ, a culture-garnering media platform and free-release imprint conceived by Skrillex.[11][12] The end of 2015 also saw the release of the group's second remix, Ghastly & Mija’s “Crank It” via Nest HQ.[13]

January 2016 saw the trio's big break with the release of “Bang” through Skrillex's OWSLA imprint via the OWSLA Worldwide Compilation.[14] The track was premiered on the first episode of OWSLA radio on Beats 1.[15] "Bang" went on to hold the number one spot on the Beatport charts and has over 2 million streams on Spotify and over 1 million plays on YouTube.

WAVEDASH released an official remix of DJ Snake’s “Ocho Cinco” in December 2016 as a part of a 27-track remix package.[16]

February 2017 saw the release of the group's debut EP Hundred, with the inclusion of standout single “Like That,” receiving heavy play in the festival circuit from acts like Skrillex.[17] The trio's Diplo & Friends mix premiered in March 2017 on the weekly BBC Radio 1 show.[18]

WAVEDASH delivered an official remix of The M Machine’s “Talking Machine” in July 2017 via Mad Zoo with a more experimental direction. Your EDM said “between the glistening melodic opening and the abrupt ending is a genius of a remix.”[19][20]

In September 2017 WAVEDASH released an official remix of Excision’s “Final Boss” off the Virus remix album.[21][22]

Slander and WAVEDASH released their first collaboration, “Move Back,” in April 2018 via Insomniac Records.[23][24][25] WAVEDASH went on to support Slander for their Headbangers Ball Tour in late 2018.[26][27] 2018 also saw the release of their joint three-track EP with Quest!, Devil Music, on Mad Zoo. Along with the accompanying music video for lead single "Devil Music" (feat. fknsyd), merchandise surrounding the release included limited edition cassettes, Devil Music hot sauces, and books of hymns. Billboard says, “It's downright evil noise for the sinner in you, and it's just cheesy and theatrical enough to be tons of fun.”[28][29][30][31]

The three-track EP was followed by the B-Side of Devil Music, featuring remixes from Mat Zo, AWE, and Shadient.[32][33]

WAVEDASH collaborated with Nghtmre on single “Grave” released through Diplo’s Mad Decent label in August 2018.[34][35][36] WAVEDASH went on to support Nghtmre on The Portal Tour in 2020.[37]

On October 25, 2018, Nghtmre and Slander announced the launch of their joint label Gud Vibrations with WAVEDASH as the first label signee. WAVEDASH announced the release of their third EP, Opening Ceremony, and released their first single “Deathwish,” which featured vocals from fknsyd.[38][39] WAVEDASH then teamed up with Shadient, a longtime collaborator and friend, to remix RL Grime’s “Era” which was released in December 2018 as a part of Nova (The Remixes, Vol. 2).[40][41] On January 25, 2019 Opening Ceremony was released in full to positive reception.[42][43]

WAVEDASH and Shadient continued collaborating with their standout originals “Get Wicked”[44][45] and “Tung Tiied”[46] both being released via Gud Vibrations.

On April 11, 2020, WAVEDASH played Nether Meant alongside American Football, Anamanaguchi, and Y2K.[47][48][49] On May 6, 2020, WAVEDASH announced they would be playing parts of their unreleased debut album at Porter Robinson’s Virtual Secret Sky Festival. [50] The trio took to social media, announcing the project being four years in the making.[51] The album is called, World Famous Tour and it was released on April 2, 2021 via Gud Vibrations with three singles, "Dummo Loop", "Stallions" and "Lemon Nades".
