Weare Middle School (formerly Weare Elementary School before 1987) is a coeducational public middle school in Weare, New Hampshire, United States, serving the community of Weare. It is part of School Administrative Unit (SAU) 24, and is administered by the Weare School District.

It is a rural sixth through eighth-grade school - a learning institution whose charge is a commitment to maintaining a positive school climate, ensuring a consistent connection to the families it serves, and embedding literacy in all of its academic programs.

The school currently serves 339 students on a campus combined with the town's upper elementary school.[1]

History[edit]

The School traces its history back to 1953 when a small seven classroom building was built in the center of Weare, New Hampshire. At the time, it was the first public primary school to be constructed in the town replacing several one-room schools throughout Weare. The School originally served grades K-8 until the opening of Center Woods Elementary School in 1990. The School was originally known as the Weare Elementary School until construction on the Town's High School was finished in 1987 when it was renamed Weare Middle School (K-4 remained at the school until the opening of Center Woods Elementary School in 1990). Before 1987, the high school students attended school in an adjacent brick building (known as Weare High School) which was acquired by the Middle School upon the opening of John Stark Regional High School. It became a 5-8 school in 1990. The two buildings that formerly made up the middle school were given informal names based off of their architectural designs, the original building was known as the White Building for its distinctive white siding exterior walls and the former high school building was called the Brick Building for its brick walls. These two building became very notorious during their later years due to being in bad condition. These conditions included asbestos and frequent power failures in the White Building, which also suffered from a small electrical fire during the late hours of February 24, 2006 which damaged a classroom [2].

In March, 2005, voters (by a vote of 1,452 to 560)[3] approved an $18 million bond for the construction of a new middle school building, following the reports of disrepair at the old buildings.

In 2006, the Weare Middle School Team America Rocketry Challenge (TARC) team placed 24th at the national championship, and submitted a proposal to NASA to build a very large rocket. Their proposal was accepted.[citation needed] The 2007 Weare Middle School TARC team not only qualified for nationals, but got the best score in New England, and was the only team in the top 100 from New Hampshire.[citation needed]

The new, two-story 135,000-square-foot (12,500 m2) school building was constructed on the slope next to the former school buildings, which were eventually torn down to make room for new athletic fields, a playground, a skate-park, and a parking lot. Construction was completed in August of 2007. The old buildings, built in 1953 and 1971 respectively, were torn down earlier that summer.

In 2015, after issues regarding overcrowding at Center Woods Elementary School, The town of Weare decided to split the school in two and move the fourth grade students from Center Woods to the lower level of the middle school building with the fifth grade classes being split from the middle school and forming Center Woods Upper Elementary School. As of 2021, the two schools share the same building and are administered by the same principal.
