Tekle Kiflemariam (born ~1959) (commonly known as Wedi Tukul) is a well-known Eritrean freedom fighter, composer, and singer. He is regarded as one of the most renowned Eritrean artists.[1]
Biography[edit]
The genre of his music is commonly understood to be folk music and is also defined as the traditional music of Eritrea. Tukul is well known for his musical talents on the krar as he is a multi-instrumentalist. His vocal capabilities are revered in Eritrea, particularly his patriotic songs.[2] Prior to his musical career, Tukul had spent time as a soldier for the EPLF. Tukul is recognized by Eritreans as having given most of his life and livelihood during the Eritrean liberation struggle and he has continued his heroic work until the present day. Through his art, Tukul strengthened the morale of Eritrean people and its combatants during the liberation struggle.[3]
