Welltory is a mobile health informatics application that lets users track their heart rate variability, stress, and energy levels, along with aggregated health and fitness analytics from different wearable devices and apps.[2] The app is compatible with Apple Inc. and Android devices, and available in English and Russian. The software company launched in 2016 and is based in New York.[3][4]

Background[edit]

Welltory, Inc was founded by Jane Smorodnikova and Pavel Pravdin.[5] It is an alumni of New York-based startup accelerator VentureOut.[6] Welltory is headquartered in New York, USA.[7][8]In 2017-2019, the company raised discernible funds through a seed series of investment rounds.[9][10]In May 2019, Welltory provided integration with IFTTT in order to show how online productivity corresponds with heart rate variability and overall health.[11] In 2019, Welltory integrated with Bitrix24, providing stress measurements for their workplace management platform to get an objective measure of how stressful the work environment is.[12]In April 2020, Welltory launched an open data study for the purpose of identifying diagnostic heart rate variability patterns of coronavirus-inflicted disease progression.[13][14] According to GooglePlay data, the Welltory app had over 500 000 installs on Google,[15][16] and Sensortower shows that Welltory has 50 000 worldwide monthly installs on the AppStore.[17]

Functions[edit]

Welltory is compatible with iOs and Android operating systems. Its AI-based algorithms analyze regular heartbeat measurements taken with the photoplethysmography (PPG) method or with ECG wearables, calculating heart rate variability (HRV) metrics in time- and frequency-domains.[18][10][19] The purpose of Welltory is to measure overall stress, energy, and productivity levels through heart rate variability analysis. Machine learning algorithms personalize baselines and alert users when their results fall outside their personal norms. Welltory supports popular heart rate straps like Polar and smartwatches with HRV features like Apple Watch. The app also gives users the option to measure HRV with their smartphone camera.[20] The app’s measurement section consists of 24 metrics, including Heart rate, Mean RR, SDNN, RMSSD, MxDMnpNN50, AMo50, HF, LF, Total Frequency power, Physical state coefficient, Kvas Endurance Index, Blood circulation efficiency, and more. The body analytics section consists of combined data synced from gadgets and apps such as Apple Watch, Garmin, Fitbit, Strava, IFTTT, Apple Health, Google Fit, Rescue Time, and others.[20][21][22][9] The Welltory app was used in a University College London (UCL) study, which examined how stress management apps support reflection and behavior change.[23]

Criticism[edit]

Some reviewers have pointed out that the free version of the app only has basic features that limit its tracking and measuring capabilities. Users have to subscribe in order to get access to all app functions. However, the critics also acknowledge that this is a common practice among many other software applications listed on the App Store (iOS).[24][25]
