Welly (toy company)
Welly Die Casting Factory Limited is a manufacturer of die-cast toy cars and has been in the scale model business since 1979.
The company's factories are located in Guangdong Province of China, and employ over 3000 workers.
History[edit]
At the beginning of the 1980s, Welly mainly produced die-cast toy cars roughly 3 inches in length (approx. 1:64 scale). 4.75 inch die-cast toy cars (approx. 1:38 scale) were added later that decade. In the 1990s, the company developed 1:24 scale models, then added 1:18 scale ones.[1] They have become collectable, with one guide saying: "While incorporating less metal and more plastic in their design than most, Welly toys still display the kind of charm and durability that are the marks of a well-made toy."[2] Another describes Welly as one of the most popular brands to collect, as it has "a very good quality / price ratio."[3]
Welly currently manufactures a wide range of scales for its customers, namely 1:18, 1:24, 1:32, 1:38, 1:43, 1:64 & 1:87. It is a licensee of over 40 different brands, including ones for cars, trucks, bicycles, and motorbikes, off-road trailers, as well as ones for full playsets. Each year, the company invests additional capital in new models.
Welly recently established a research and development department, and began to developing different ranges of radio-controlled models, including 1:32 scale die cast cars and trucks, and 1:12 scale plastic RC cars.
