Wendy van der Poel (born 11 November 1971) is a Dutch former long track speed skater from Roelofarendsveen, who was active between 1986 and 1991.[2][3][4][5][6][7][8] Van der Poel was a sprinter.

Career

Junior period

In 1986 Van der Poel became Dutch junior champion at the championships in Thialf. She was later honored by her skating club “IJsvereniging Alkemade”.[9][6] At the 1991 Dutch Sprint Championships she won all the distances and so the national title.[7][10] After riding three personal bests at the 1991 Dutch Allround championships, Van der Poel was selected to represent the Netherlands at the 1991 World Junior Speed Skating Championships.[11][12] Van der Poel also competed in other international competitions, including country matches in 1988, 1989 and 1990.[5] She was a member of Jong Oranje [nl] selection team[13] of Leen Pfrommer [nl].[14]

Senior period

In 1990 Van der Poel was invited to become a member of the Dutch national sprint team of the KNSB-Kernploeg [nl] together with Renske Vellinga, Christine Aaftink and Anita Loorbach.[15][16][3] The team came together at the team presentation in May 1990 at Papendal[17], but later, before the first ice training, she rejected the invitation because she wanted to focus on allround speed skating and not on sprinting.[18] At the 1990 Dutch Sprint Championships she did not win the bronze medal and finished 4th overall behind Anita Loorbach.[12] She participated in the 1989, 1990, 1991 Dutch Single Distance Championships in 500 metres and 1000 metres events. At the national championships in 1989 she fell during the 500 metres event.[2] In all the other events she started during these years she had a top-10 finish, finishing 5th in the 1000m event in 1990 and 6th in the 500m event in 1991.

Personal and family

Her brother Arnold van der Poel is also a former speed skater and speed skating coach, and her sister Anja van der Poel a former short track speed skater.[2][3] Van der Poel attended Holtland College, a fashion school in Leiden.
