In folklore, the weretiger or were-tiger is an ailuranthropic or werecat type creature that is believed to be a person who transforms into a tiger. The way that people become weretigers vary from culture to culture. This individual may be afflicted by malefic spirits, inherited this trait, or chose this ability through magical means. Stories of weretigers are peppered across the eastern world from India to Korea.

Etymology[edit]

The word "were" in were tiger comes form the Old English "wer" meaning man, the usage of this in modern culture stems form stories of werewolves and is now used in the western world to describe most therianthropic creatures. Though different names exist for weretigers from the different languages and cultures that have these stories.

Malaysia[edit]

The Harimau Jadian refers to a practioner of magic who can choose to transform into a tiger. Stories of the Harimau Jadian can range from being a benevolent protector to a person of low moral value. It may also be called Harimau chenaku referring to Sumatran ethnic groups believed to be weretigers.[1][2]

Khasi[edit]

The Khasi people live in the Meghalaya region in north-eastern India. The Khla Phuli is a person who is believed to transform into a tiger. This weretiger is sometimes called Sansaram or San Saram meaning "five claws" because it leaves behind five toed tracks as opposed to a traditional tiger having four toed tracks. The transformation takes place in a dream state allowing the spirit of the individual to take on this tiger form. In some cases it is also believed that these shapeshifting abilities can be inherited from family members.[3]

Clinical lycanthropy is a condition that causes a person to believe they are an animal or hold the ability to become one. often associated with werewolves.[5]

Hypertrichosis[edit]

Hypertrichosis is a condition that causes an excess of hair on the body also known as werewolf syndrome. People with this condition are normally born into it. Certain hair growth drugs can cause temporary hypertrichosis.[6]
