Werteunion
The Werteunion (Values Union or Union of Values) is a Christian-democratic, centre-right and conservative pressure group[1] within the Christian Democratic Union of Germany (CDU) and sister Bavarian Christian Social Union (CSU). With more than 3,000 members the Werteunion is forming a platform for conservative and economic liberal politicians.
Activities
Since the group was formed in 2017, the Werteunion has been criticizing CDU-Chancellor Angela Merkel and the Cabinet of Germany for its role in the European migrant crisis.[2] In the 2018 Christian Democratic Union of Germany leadership election the group endorsed Merkel's arch-rival Friedrich Merz, who lost the election against Annegret Kramp-Karrenbauer.[3][4] The Werteunion demands more direct democracy within the CDU/CSU, and a primary election within the parties for the Next German federal election.[5]
Members
Leader of the Werteunion, and its predecessor organization Freiheitlich-konservativer Aufbruch, is Alexander Mitsch. After Hans-Georg Maaßen was sent into retirement in November 2018 as head of Germany's domestic intelligence service (Federal Office for the Protection of the Constitution), he joined the Werteunion in February 2019.[6] Maaßen asserted that, under Merkel as former CDU chairperson (from 2000 until 2018), the party had "moved far to the left."[7]
