WestWards is a local community-based political ticket which contests the board and council seats in the Waitakere Ward of the Auckland Council. WestWards has a strong focus on transparency, community, and people.
Ken Turner, Chair of WestWards, was elected to the Waitākere Ranges Local Board in a 2018 by-election.
History
In the 2013 Auckland local elections, Mark Brickell, Jonny Knox, Linda Potauaine and Ken Turner stood on the WestWards ticket for the Waitākere Ranges Local Board. They did not win any seats.[1]
In the 2016 Auckland local elections, Turner stood for Auckland Council in the Waitakere Ward.[2] He had been awarded a medal for bravery for a rescue on the Manukau Harbour in 2014.[3][4] Turner, Dave Dempster, Carl Harding and Potauaine stood for Waitākere Ranges Local Board, and Angus Cathcart stood for the Whau Local Board. None of them won seats.[5]
Turner won a seat on the Waitākere Ranges Local Board in the 2018 by-election,[6] ending the monopoly of Future West, the party that had held all six seats on the board.[7]
Westwards is running a team in the 2019 Auckland local elections for the Waitākere Ranges Local Board. Candidates are Turner, Cathcart, Michelle Clayton, Dempster, Cheryl Kelly and Potauaine.[8] They are only running for local board, so as to have no conflicts of interest and to focus on local issues.
Policies
Their focus is on sensible spending of rates, honesty, transparency, and practical outcomes. Their policies are: rates to be spent locally and wisely, practical investment in our diverse communities, safe and strong town centres where people belong, protecting nature without exclusion from it.
Turner has spoken out on issues of wasteful council spending,[9] supported flooding victims while advocating for better council maintenance of core infrastructure,[10] and has been a spokesperson on sensible measures regarding kauri dieback and public access to the regional park.[11]
