West Assam Milk Producers' Co-Operative Union Limited, briefly known as WAMUL is the oldest and largest dairy cooperative in North East India. It is approved by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) and is currently managed by National Dairy Development Board. Its headquarter and main plant is located at Panjabari in Kamrup Metropolitan district. WAMUL markets their milk and dairy products under the brand name PURABI.[1]

WAMUL sells an average of 50,000 liters of milk daily from its Guwahati-based plant and markets about 7,000[2] liters of dairy products across the city as well as in some parts of the state.[3]

About 30,000 local farmers of Assam have been associated with this co-operative.[4]

Background and initial years[edit]

WAMUL was born in 1976 in the shape of a co-operative, as a result of the collective effort of Milk producers in Nagaon, Morigaon, Goalpara, Nalbari and Kamrup districts. The association was established under Operation Flood of National Dairy Development Board for dairy development in Assam. In 1981, it started to procure milk from dairy co-operative of Rampur, subsequently supplied the milk to Town Milk Supply Scheme in Guwahati.[5][6] [7]

The foundation stone of the Dairy plant at Panjabari in Kamrup Metropolitan district was laid by former Chief Minister of Assam Hiteswar Saikia on Thursday, May 5, 1983. In 1986, a Chilling Centre was installed at Khanapara, Guwahati from where marketing of milk was also started. In the same year, WAMUL introduced chilled milk in poly pouch under the brand name Purabi. In 1989, a liquid milk plant was commissioned with a processing capacity of 60,000 litres per day. Marketing of pasteurized and homogenized toned milk in poly pouch was launched thereafter. In 1991, WAMUL successfully launched double toned milk in the market.[5]

2008-Present[edit]

National Dairy Development Board has been looking after the operations of WAMUL since 2008.[8]

On 7th January 2022, Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma, the Chief Minister of Assam and Parshottam Rupala, Union Minister of Fisheries, Animal Husbandry and Dairying, Govt. of India, laid the foundation stone at Srimanta Sankardev Kalakshetra for the expansion project[9] of Purabi Dairy plant from 60 Thousands litre per day to 150 Thousands Litre Per Day. The expansion is funded by Assam Agri-Business and Rural Transformation Project (APART) under the Government of Assam. At the same event, the Govt. of Assam signed an MoU with NDDB for the formation of Joint Venture Company of 2,000 Crore that will work towards the setting up of six new dairy plants in Assam in seven years.[10]

Operations[edit]

Raw cow milk is collected by WAMUL twice daily from the authorized milk cooperatives which are located in the villages of Assam. These cooperatives are called Dairy Cooperative Society (DCS) or Milk Producers Institutions (MPI). Tests are being conducted at DCS level to ensure the quality of milk. The processing of milk is done at the main plant located at Panjabari. It is a fully automated dairy plant.[11]

Cattle Feed Plant[edit]

The newly developed Cattle Feed Plant has been commissioned at Changsari,[12] Guwahati to provide nutritious food to the local cows.[13] The plant will produce Mineral Mixture and By-Pass Protein Meal. This project was approved under Rural Infrastructure Development Fund Scheme of NABARD through Cooperation Department of the state government.[14]

Products[edit]

Other than Milk, the main dairy products of WAMUL are: Curd, Sweet Curd, Cream, Paneer, Ghee and Lassi.[15]
