West Virginia Explorer is a news source and guide for West Virginia travel and history published online since 2000. The guide was founded in 1999 by David Sibray, a journalist and publisher for Thomson Newspapers, who had envisioned the possibilities of creating a source of online travel information independent of state government. By 2005 the publication had become one of the largest sources of tourism traffic serving the state and had become the flagship for more than 200,000 pages of information regarding Mountain State travel.[1]

In 2012 Sibray divested his interest in associated Web page and reorganized the sites remaining 2,000 pages to integrate with social media. The publication is a recognized Google News source,[2] and its publisher is an associate member of the West Virginia Press Association.
