"Whatever" is a collaborative single by Norwegian DJ Kygo and American singer Ava Max, released on 19 January 2024.[1] The tropical house song was produced by Kygo and Petey Martin. It centers around an interpolation of Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever", with Max changing the lyrics to be about a breakup.
Background[edit]
Max posted behind the scenes photos throughout December 2023 of the video shoot.[citation needed] Kygo posted a snippet of the song on January 3, 2024, on his social media platforms.[citation needed] Kygo posted another snippet on January 5, this time with Max's vocals.[2] Max then posted an HQ snippet later that day.[citation needed]
Style[edit]
"Whatever" is a tropical house song.[3] Its chorus is built on an interpolation of Shakira's "Whenever, Wherever".[3][1] Max modifies the lyrics of the original song's chorus to "Whatever, whatever/We were never good together/I'll be here and you stay there/Truth is, I never cared",[4] making for a "harsh rebuke of the limitless love" presented in the original.[5] The instrumental is built around an acoustic guitar and a "pumping" kick drum.[4][5]
Reception[edit]
EDM.com's Jason Heffler called the song an "infectious cover" and "a saccharine anthem that will soon dominate dance radio."[4] We Rave You's Chris Vuoncino said to "expect 'Whatever' to be on repeat all year long at festivals and radio stations everywhere."[5] Less positively, Exclaim!'s Sydney Brasil wrote that the song's "horrid interpolation" is its "main crime", and that it "turns the [interpolated] track's chorus into a lazy breakup anthem".[3]
