WiFi Map is a decentralized connectivity platform that enables users to locate and share public Wi-Fi hotspots and essential amenities such as public restrooms, tap water locations, and ATMs. The service operates through a mobile app available on iOS and Android, and a web platform for browsers.
Originally launched in 2014, WiFi Map transitioned to a Web3 infrastructure in April 2023 by introducing the $WIFI token and migrating its rewards system on-chain using the Polygon blockchain.
Overview
WiFi Map started as a Web2 platform aimed at helping users connect to free public Wi-Fi networks. Its user base grew organically, with millions of contributors adding hotspot details, passwords, reviews, and photos. By mid-2025, the platform had recorded over 190 million users[1], nearly 14 million contributors, and more than 16 million verified Wi-Fi hotspots worldwide. WiFi Map has been repeatedly highlighted by major media outlets as a recommended travel app. USA Today[2] listed it among the “10 smartphone apps for traveling boomers” in 2018, while Esquire[3] included it in its roundup of the best travel apps for frequent flyers. Similarly, Travel Weekly[4] and Business News Daily[5] ranked WiFi Map among the essential apps for global travelers.
Features
- Wi-Fi Hotspots: Users can discover, add, and verify public Wi-Fi networks.
- Essential Amenities: Since 2024, users can also add and review public restrooms, drinking fountains, and ATMs.
- Speed Tests: Built-in functionality allows users to run internet speed tests and share results.
- Offline Maps: Premium members can download maps for use without an internet connection.
- eSIM Service: WiFi Map offers global mobile internet via eSIM in over 80 countries.
- Rewards System: In-app actions are rewarded with $WIFI tokens, distributed instantly on-chain based on verified contributions.
Transition to Web3
In 2023, WiFi Map launched the $WIFI token to decentralize its reward mechanisms and governance. By 2024, the app integrated on-chain transactions via the Polygon blockchain, aligning with the principles of Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN)[6][7][8]. Coverage of the platform’s Web3 shift appeared in outlets such as Benzinga[9], which described WiFi Map as “starting its Web3 journey to make internet access more accessible,” and CryptoDaily[10][11], which emphasized its move to integrate on-chain rewards and governance. In March 2023, BitNewsBot[12] published an interview with co-founder Denis Sklyarov discussing the vision behind the transition.
All in-app actions that contribute value, such as adding hotspots or uploading photos, now trigger real-time, on-chain rewards. This move made WiFi Map one of the first large-scale Web2 platforms to fully transition into a tokenized Web3 model.
Recognition
In 2024, WiFi Map was named an IDC Innovator[13] in the DePIN space. As of July 2025, the project ranks #1 on Polygon and among the top 15 dApps across all blockchains, according to DappRadar. In addition to industry recognition by IDC[13], WiFi Map has been profiled in Forbes[14] as a budget-friendly connectivity solution, and covered by Coingape[15] and TradeCrypto[16] as a leading player in the Decentralized Physical Infrastructure Networks (DePIN) space.
