Wickliffe Syiem

Wickliffe Syiem (1909–1988) was a '''Syiem khynnah''' (Deputy King) of Hima Nongstoin, part of the Khasi Hills.[1] He was born in Nongstoin on August 15, 1909. Syiem obtained an engineering degree from the College of Engineering Technology, Baroda, Gujarat, and became the first engineer from the Khasi community[2]
He died on October 21, 1988. His death is commemorated in Meghalaya as U Syiem Wickliffe Day (Founder Of Hynniewtrep Nationalism).
Wickliffe Syiem was a freedom fighter who fought for the autonomy of Nongstoin in the Khasi Hills. Before the Partition of India in 1947, the Khasi State was a princely state under various jurisdictions of 30 Himas (Kingdoms) and 12 Dolois (Elekas). On January 13, 1948, Wickliffe Syiem declared Nongstoin as a Khasi Sovereign State[2]. Until that time, the Khasi State had not signed the Instrument of Accession with India. But in August 1948, the Indian government under the leadership of PM Jawaharlal Nehru compelled Syiem to sign the Instrument of Accession (IoA) under three subjects: Defence, External Affairs, and Communication.
