Wilbur Labs is an American startup studio (also known as a venture studio or venture builder) headquartered in Miami, Florida and founded in 2016 by Phil Santoro and David Kolodny. Unlike traditional venture capital firms, Wilbur Labs identifies customer pain points, creates solutions internally, and provides the funding and operational support required to scale them into independent companies.[1]

Since its inception, the studio has built and invested in over 21 companies across the ecommerce, travel, finance, and pet care sectors.[2]

History

Wilbur Labs was founded in 2016 by Phil Santoro and David Kolodny.[3] Originally founded in San Francisco, California, Wilbur Labs relocated its headquarters to Miami, Florida in 2024.[4] The founders met while working at Google in Mountain View, California.[5] Rather than leaving to launch a single product, they adopted the startup studio model to build multiple companies in parallel using shared infrastructure.

Business model

Wilbur Labs operates as a startup studio (also known as a venture studio). The studio identifies market opportunities, then builds the initial team and product internally.[6] The studio provides shared resources, including engineering, marketing, and legal support, to guide companies from conception to exit.[7]

Portfolio

The Wilbur Labs portfolio comprises over 21 companies.[8] Notable ventures include:

  • VacationRenter: Launched in 2018, VacationRenter aggregates accommodations from various platforms. In 2020, it reportedly became the fastest-growing travel startup to reach $1 billion in annual gross bookings.[9]
  • Barkbus: Launched in 2020, Barkbus is a mobile dog grooming service. It has since scaled to become the largest mobile grooming provider in the United States.[10]
