Wild Maidenhead
Wild Maidenhead is a local wildlife group based in Maidenhead, Berkshire. The group was set up by local residents in 2015 to help look after the wildlife and wild places in the Maidenhead area, bringing together those who either live or work in the area and who have an interest in nature and wildlife.
The group's interests are in discovering, celebrating, supporting and protecting biodiversity, whether in the area's 3,000 acres of domestic gardens, or in parks, wildlife areas, nature reserves and Sites of Special Scientific Interest (SSSIs).
Wild Maidenhead also acts as a hub for a wide range of local organisations with specific local or species interests, for exchanging information, gathering data and sharing knowledge and experience.
Wildlife
Wildlife which has declined in the Maidenhead area includes hedgehogs, stag beetles, farmland birds, water voles, bees, owls, butterflies, house sparrows, wildflowers, swifts, dragonflies, slow worms, bats, house martins, frogs and toads, and swallows. The probable total loss of all water voles is particularly significant, given that the world-famous children's book, The Wind In The Willows by Kenneth Grahame, was written locally.
Area
The group focuses on the ten western wards in an area from Knowl Hill, Berkshire in the west, to Cookham in the north, Maidenhead town in the east and Fifield, Berkshire in the south, home to around 80,000 people.
Co-operation
Wild Maidenhead aims to work in partnership with residents, the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead (RBWM) and its elected Councillors, developers, schools, Parish Councils, farmers, large landowners, religious centres, other relevant non-wildlife groups and businesses, to protect and enhance biodiversity in Maidenhead. The group will run events and projects to educate, inform, enthuse and engage. It will seek ways to ensure that biodiversity is taken account of in local decisions.
Biodiversity Action Plan
The group aims to produce a biodiversity action plan based on data sourced from group members and local residents, local experts, natural history groups, existing partner organisations and national organisations. Wild Maidenhead is apolitical and seeks positive and constructive dialogue with all those interested in, and with experience in, this topic.
Administration and information
Wild Maidenhead is run by a committee and open to membership for a donation, currently £5. The Wild Maidenhead website is at www.wildmaidenhead.org.uk.[1] The group also maintains a Facebook page.
Activities
In addition to its research for the local biodiversity action plan, the group holds regular open meetings on wildlife subjects and takes an active role in practical conservation activities.
Status
Wild Maidenhead is recognised as a charity by HMRC.
