Wilfred Stanley Haines (1905 - 19 June 1944) was an English fireman and painter. Haines was inspired by the romanticist work of J. M. W. Turner, and gained notoriety for his paintings of scenes of London and Bath during the Blitz[1] while on his watch post.[2] Wilfred was also in Bath during Haines was killed at his watch-post in June 1944 as a result of a V-1 flying bomb attack on Southwark, London.[3][4]

Biography[edit]

Haines was born in 1905 to William Haines and Annie Burrows in Surrey, England. William Haines worked as a tapestry restorer, which Wilfred continued, acquiring a position at Morris and Co. as a textile designer. Several of his works are in collection at the Victoria and Albert Museum.

In the Second World War, Haines spent time as an fireman in the Auxiliary Fire Service, active in both Bath and London.
