William Meredith Samuel[1] (born 20 February 1952) is a British banker. A City of London veteran, Samuel has held various senior roles within the British financial services industry.
Biography
Samuel was educated at Rugby School and Durham University, graduating with a first-class degree in Chemistry.[1][2]
Career
He spent much of his career with Schroders, including when the bank was taken over by Citigroup in 2000.[2] As part of the deal, Samuel, then in charge of investment banking, became co-chief executive of the new firm Schroder Salomon Smith Barney formed by Citigroup merging its investment banking business with newly acquired Schroders.[3] He joined Lazard as vice-chairman in 2003, and in the same year was appointed by the Financial Services Authority as a senior advisor on investment banking, while retaining his advisory role with Lazard. Parachuted in to become chairman of Howdens Joinery in 2006, he shored up the joinery side of the business by selling its retail unit to private equity buyers.[2]
In 2017 Samuel took up the chairmanship of Tilney Bestinvest and oversaw its merger with Smith & Williamson. He stepped down from this role in 2021.[4]
TSB
In 2014 he was made chairman of TSB Bank, which was then being spun off from its parent Lloyds Banking Group, by Win Bischoff.[5] He served in this role until 2018, when he was succeeded by Richard Meddings.[6] He was criticised for his role in a failed overhaul of the TSB computer system, which saw two million customers frozen out of their accounts. A report by Slaughter & May accused Samuel of not hiring enough people with "independent tech expertise" to the board.[7]
