William Garfield Walker
William Garfield Walker is an American conductor and composer based in Vienna. He currently serves as the chief conductor of the Nova Orchester Wien.
Career path
Early Years
William Garfield Walker initially played the saxophone and cello, with the latter becoming his primary instrument. During high school, he taught himself to play the French horn, euphonium, flute, bassoon, and timpani. In addition to his instrumental studies, Walker developed an interest in composition, teaching himself the craft and composing his first symphonic tone poem for a large orchestra at the age of 17.[1] At 15 years old, Walker joined the Mississippi Symphony Orchestra as a cellist, making him one of the youngest musicians to perform with the ensemble.[2]
Studies in Chicago
Walker studied cello with Richard Hirschl of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra and took part in masterclasses and private sessions with members of the orchestra. He credits his time with musicians of the orchestra as shaping his concept of sound and orchestral playing. He also participated in masterclasses with Natalia Gutman, Yo-Yo Ma, Desmond Hoebig, and Astrid Schween.[3]
Studies in London
Walker later studied at the Royal College of Music in London under Alexander Boyarsky, where he served as the solo cellist of the opera orchestra. During this period, he performed under conductors including Vladimir Jurowski and Riccardo Muti, collaborated with Håkan Hardenberger, and performed works by Steve Reich in concerts attended by the composer.
Studies in Vienna
Walker completed his conducting studies in Vienna, where he studied with Andreas Stoehr and Niels Muus, with Vladimir Fedoseyev preparing him for his final concert. As a student in Vienna, he regularly attended Vienna Philharmonic rehearsals, observing many of the world's leading conductors, which he credits as an important part of his artistic development. He also participated in conducting programs and masterclasses with Jorma Panula, Riccardo Muti, and Paavo Järvi.[4]
Nova Orchester Wien
William Garfield Walker has served as the chief conductor of the Nova Orchester Wien since 2020.[5] In 2024, as part of the Bruckner Year celebrations, the Nova Orchester Wien performed Bruckner's 4th Symphony at the Wiener Konzerthaus in collaboration with the International Bruckner Society, receiving high praise for the interpretation.[6]
Recognitions
Walker has received numerous awards for his work. He was a three-time recipient of the Solti Foundation U.S. Career Assistance Award (2022, 2023, 2024) and served as a Solti Resident at the Washington National Opera.[1] In 2020, he was awarded the AAF Ansbacher/Faber Conducting Fellowship, and in the same year, the Mississippi House of Representatives passed a resolution honoring his contributions to music.[7] In 2023, Walker won first prize in the Professional Orchestra Division of The American Prize National Nonprofit Competitions in the Performing Arts. Additionally, he was invited to the Washington National Opera for the 2023 season.[2]
Influence and Repertoire
Walker's conducting style is often described as expressive,[8] particularly in his interpretations of both classical and contemporary works. His repertoire spans a wide range of composers, from Bach, Bruckner, Mahler, and Shostakovich to Lili Boulanger and Florence Price.[3]
