William Kelley is a wine critic. He reviews Burgundy, Champagne, English Sparkling Wine and Madeira for Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, the publication founded by wine critic Robert M. Parker Jr.[1]

Education and early life[edit]

Kelley was born in London and studied at St. John’s College, Oxford, completing an Bachelor of Arts with first class honors, winning a Gibbs Prize.[2] He remained at St. John’s for post graduate study, completing both a Master of Studies, and Doctor of Philosophy in History. His doctoral thesis considered Victorian understandings of the Balkans and Ottoman Empire.[3] Kelley served as president of the Stubbs Society between 2009 and 2011, and published in a number of scholarly journals including the Proceedings of the British Academy,[4] but ultimately chose to pursue his passion for wine rather than an academic career. He credits wine writer the late Hugo-Dunn Meynell, a protégé of André Simon,[5] with his introduction to the wines of Bordeaux and Burgundy.[6] As a graduate student, Kelley presided over the Oxford University Wine Circle between 2011 and 2015, organizing weekly tastings with some of the most celebrated wineries of France, Italy, Spain, Germany, and California. During these years, he began regularly to visit the vineyards and wineries of Europe.[7]

Career[edit]

Kelley emigrated to California in 2015, working harvest with winemaker Thomas Brown in Napa Valley. At the same time, he began writing for Decanter Magazine.[8] In 2016, he was shortlisted for the Louis Roederer International Wine Writers’ Awards Emerging Writer of the Year, and in 2017 he was awarded the Frank J. Prial Fellowship to the Professional Wine Writers’ Symposium at Meadowood, Napa Valley,[9] as well as being shortlisted for the Louis Roederer Emerging Writer Award and Feature Writer of the Year Award.[10] In addition to his work for Decanter has also contributed to other publications including Noble Rot Magazine, and The World of Fine Wine.[11] In late 2017, Kelley joined Robert Parker’s Wine Advocate, where he covers the wines of Burgundy, Champagne, Madeira and English Sparkling Wine.[12] As the publication’s youngest reviewer, he has won praise as its “wunderkind […] who is barely 30 but writes with the authority of a man twice his age”,[13], and been described as "one of the world's present and future leading authorities on B[urgundy]".[14] As well as writing about wine, he produces his own: Chenin Blanc from Clarksburg, California, and Chambolle-Musigny in Burgundy. Kelley contends that his practical experience in cellars in the Côte d’Or and California inform his wine criticism.[1] Today, he divides his time between Beaune, France and the United States.
