William Marshall (British Army officer, born 1889)

From EverybodyWiki Bios & Wiki

William Macandrew Marshall (6 February 1889-19 March 1918) was a British Indian Army captain.

Early life[edit]

Marshall was born on 6 February 1889, in Sialkot District, British Raj. He was the son of William Simpson Marshall and Mary Augusta Marshall.[1]

Career[edit]

Marshall was commissioned into the Indian army on 25 January 1908.[1] By 1915, during World War I, he served as the captain of the 37th Dogras regiment, serving in Mesopotamia.[2]

On 1 February 1918, Marshall was stationed in Najaf, a city he would come to administer over the following weeks.[3] Troops were kept out of this religious city.[1] William R. Marshall, British commander-in-chief of Mesopotamia, said he was popular among local inhabitants.[4]

Death[edit]

In the morning of 19 March 1918, a number of Najafis led by Haji Najm al-Baqqal disguised as Shabanah, the British-employed Arab police, entered the citadel of Najaf where they murdered Marshall. This marked the beginning of a Najafi uprising, which would later result in a British siege of the city. The rebels responsible for Mashall's death would surrender in May, after several weeks of resistance.[5]
