William Sparrow Simpson
William Sparrow Simpson (1828-1897) Anglican Priest and librarian.
William Sparrow Simpson was educated at Queen's College, Cambridge, receiving his BA in 1851, and earning an MA from Oxford four years later.[1] He was appointed a Doctor of Divinity by the Archbishop of Canterbury in 1873.[2]
Ordained priest in 1852 he carried out a curacy at St Mark's Kennington (1851-1856). In 1857 he became Rector of St Vedast Foster Lane with St Michael-le-Querne, St Matthew Friday-street, and St. Peter Cheapside, which he retained until his death. Much of his career was spent at St. Paul's Cathedral where he was a minor canon from 1861, Succentor (1876-1885), Junior Cardinal (1878-1881), and Sub-Dean from 1881.[1][3]
He was an active librarian of St. Paul's Cathedral from 1861, and was additionally made an Honorary Librarian at Lambeth Palace Library in 1870.[1] He was a noted antiquary and collector of books and curiosities, and has been described as 'the best historian of St Paul's Cross'.[4]
He was the father of William John Sparrow Simpson, who published his father's memoir in 1899.[5]
