Witherfall is an American progressive metal band founded by Joseph Michael, Jake Dreyer, Adam Sagan, and Anthony Crawford in 2013. The band has released three albums and one EP to date. Witherfall's first album Nocturnes and Requiems was released in 2017.[1] After signing with Century Media, the band released their sophomore album A Prelude to Sorrow (2018),[2] which reached #18 on the Billboard Heatseekers Chart.[3]

Witherfall's third album Curse of Autumn (2021) charted in several countries, peaking at #20 in Germany and #7 in the United States.[4][5]

Swedish artist Kristian Wåhlin created a series of paintings, called the Witherfall series, as cover art for the band's albums and EPs.[6]

History[edit]

Formation and Nocturnes and Requiems: 2013–2017[edit]

Witherfall was formed in 2013 by Joseph Michael and Jake Dreyer, both of whom had previously been members of White Wizzard. Drummer Adam Sagan of Into Eternity and Circle II Circle, and bassist Anthony Crawford also joined the band, rounding out its original lineup.[7]

Witherfall released their debut album Nocturnes and Requiems on February 10, 2017. The album was co-written and co-produced by Michael and Dreyer, and mixed by Zeuss.[8] Swedish artist Kristian Wåhlin created the cover art for the album. Witherfall partnered with Loudwire for an exclusive album stream on February 7, three days ahead of release.[9]

Adam Sagan passed away from lymphoma on December 7, 2016, during the final stages of production for Nocturnes and Requiems,[10] and the album was posthumously dedicated to him.[11]

The album was well-received,[12] and has a critic score of 75 on Album of the Year.[13] Metal.de gave it 9 out of 10 stars, calling it "the album of the year in its genre".[14]

Witherfall made their live debut on the 70000 Tons of Metal cruise festival.[15] The ashes of Adam Sagan were smuggled aboard the cruise ship by his brothers Gordon and Nate, and were scattered onstage during the performance so that he could join them onstage.[16][17]

A Prelude to Sorrow: 2018[edit]

After the release of Nocturnes and Requiems, the band began working on their next album A Prelude to Sorrow.[18][19] The album was dedicated to Sagan, and dealt with the emotional growth and turmoil that the band underwent in the wake of his illness and death.[20] "APS", the acronym for its title, references the initials "Adam Paul Sagan".[21]

Witherfall supported Kamelot on their Japan tour in November 2018. Drummer Steve Bolognese and guitarist Fili Bibiano joined the band as touring members.[22]

Hungarian drummer Gergo Borlai was session drummer on the album A Prelude to Sorrow.[23] Wåhlin returned to design the cover art for A Prelude to Sorrow, which was mixed by Zeuss and co-produced by Michael and Dreyer.[24]

A Prelude to Sorrow was released on November 2, 2018. Shortly after its release, the album peaked at #18 on the Billboard Heatseekers chart.[3]

The album received positive reviews upon its release.[25][26] Critics noted its dark, claustrophobic ambience, and its handling of darker themes such as grief, death and mortality.[27][28] KC Stanfield of Screamer Magazine described it as "a mesmerizing balance between energetic and calm with Witherfall seamlessly transitioning from one to other."[29]

Vintage EP: 2019–2020[edit]

In 2019, Witherfall supported Sonata Arctica on their "Acoustic Adventures Tour" in Europe, which was also Witherfall's first European tour. While preparing for the tour, Michael and Dreyer began some of the acoustic songs which appeared on the EP Vintage.[30] Keyboardist Alex Nasla and percussionist James "Timbali" Cornwell joined the band for the production of the EP. On March 22, 2019 Witherfall released Vintage, an acoustic EP which contained covers of several songs by Witherfall and other bands like Helloween.[31]

Tempest Red Blend Wine[edit]

In May 2020, Witherfall partnered with Charlie & Echo winery to create Tempest Red Blend Wine, a signature Witherfall-themed wine.[32] The wine appeared in Wine Enthusiast Magazine and Metal Rules.[33]

Curse of Autumn: 2021–present[edit]

After the release of Vintage, the band began working on their third album, Curse of Autumn. Drummer Marco Minnemann joined the band in 2020 for the Curse of Autumn cycle.[34] Unlike Witherfall's previous albums, which were produced by Michael and Dreyer, Curse of Autumn was co-produced by Iced Earth's Jon Schaffer. The album was mixed by Jim Morris and mastered by Tom Morris.[35]

The album's lead single, "As I Lie Awake", was released on November 20, 2020. The music video for the single was directed by Zev Deans.[36] The album' second single, "Another Face", was released on December 9, 2020.[37] The music video for "The Other Side of Fear", directed by Cig Neutron, was released on January 15, 2021.[38]

Witherfall released Curse of Autumn on March 5, 2021.[39] The band released the music video for the single "And They All Blew Away" on the day of the album's release.[40] A limited edition vinyl of Curse of Autumn was released on April 2.[41]

Curse of Autumn received positive reviews, with critics praising the album's composition and Michael's vocals in particular.[42][43] Distorted Sound scored the album 9 out of 10, praising its theatrical storytelling.[44]

Zenae Zukowski of Metal Insider said that:

"Curse of Autumn has a considerable amount to digest in terms of experiments and styles. It doesn’t run flat or dry like a cheap bottle of Shiraz... [it] pours with a variety of flavors, such as a delicious blend of Pinot Noir".[45]

The album reached #83 on Billboard’s Current Albums Chart.[5] The album reached #16 on Metal Contraband's Top 50,[46] and #7 on NACC Radio chart.[47] In Germany, it reached #20 on the Top 100 Albums Chart.[4] The album reached #73 on the Albums Top 100 in Switzerland.[48]

Schaffer was arrested following his involvement in the 2021 United States Capitol attack.[49] In response, Dreyer called the situation "unfortunate", and commented that he had not been involved with Iced Earth since 2018, and was "focusing on Witherfall".[50]
