Wolfgang Meid (born 12 November 1929 in Pfungstadt) is a German linguist and Professor Emeritus of Comparative Linguistics.[1][not in citation given] Meid is regarded as one of the leading Indo-Europeanists and Celtologists.[2]
Scientific career[edit]
Meid studied comparative linguistics, classical philology and Indology at the universities of Frankfurt am Main and Tübingen. He received his doctorate in Tübingen in 1955.Between 1955 and 1959 he worked as Assistant Lecturer in German at University College in Dublin, where his research on Celtic language and literature began. In 1961 Meid habilitated at the Seminar for Comparative Linguistics at the University of Würzburg with a thesis on the Indo-European foundations of Old Irish absolute and conjunct verbal inflection. After teaching at the Universities of Dublin and Würzburg[3], he became professor at the University of Innsbruck in 1965.[1], where he was instrumental in building up the discipline as Professor of Comparative Linguistics (today: Lingusitics).
Meid has been a corresponding member of the Austrian Academy of Sciences since 1974; he founded and headed the Celtic Commission of the Academy for many years. In 1993 he was awarded the Wilhelm Hartel Prize of the Academy, in 1994 the Grand Decoration of Honor in Silver for Services to the Republic of Austria, and in 2003 the "Pro Scientia Hungarica" Prize of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences. Wolfgang Meid's output includes 40 monographs, about 130 other works, numerous reviews and translations (from English and Welsh)[1]. Wolfgang Meid was the editor of the series "Innsbrucker Beiträge zur Sprachwissenschaft" (IBS) [Innsbruck contributions to linguistics] (established by Meid in 1970) and "Innsbrucker Beiträge zur Kulturwissenschaft" (IBK) [Innsbruck contributions to cultural studies] (established in 1953), both of which comprise more than 100 published volumes as well as co-editor of Archaeolingua (Budapest).
