Traditional Chinese五行武術
Literal meaningfive elements martial arts

Wu Xing Wushu is an American hybrid martial art that was founded by Josh Burchell in 2009, and combines elements from several different fighting styles.

History[edit]

Though officially founded in 2009, the foundations for Wu Xing Wushu stretch back to the 1990s. The governing and standards body for Wu Xing Wushu is the Wu Xing Martial Arts Institute. Burchell started to develop the style in the mid 1990s after seeking to combine the traditional Okinawan Isshin-ryū system he had learned as a young child with the ancient Chinese Kung Fu styles he studied in adulthood. During his enlistment with the U.S. Air Force just after the turn of the century, Burchell began studying Japanese Jujutsu.

The art evolved from Josh Burchell's original training in Kung Fu. Burchell would train in various other styles under some of the most respected instructors in the United States. These instructors included Seibukan Jujutsu founder Julio Toribio, Choy Li Fut Kung Fu Sifu Wojciech Konopka, and Ke' Shoto-Do Karate founder Mike Small.
